Maspeth is located in Queens. Like many of the towns in New York City, it was founded by Dutch and English settlers in the early 17th century.  Maspeth shares a border with Woodside to the north, Greenpoint to the west, Ridgewood to the south, and Elmhurst to the east.  Maspeth is named after the Mespeatches Indians, one of the 13 Indian tribes that lived on Long Island. Fast forward to today and Maspeth is a thriving community of middle-class singles, families, and loyal family dogs. You can find most of the commercial businesses and services along Grand Avenue if you choose to wander that way on your daily stroll. Despite its location in New York, residents will sometimes consider it to have a small-town vibe, so walkers in the area can appreciate the balance in the surroundings. Maspeth also has a few parks and plazas for those searching for greener spaces to wander.

The streets are black asphalt and the sidewalks are paved in concrete, so there may be some days that you want to watch the temperature to ensure the pavement is not too hot for your canine companion.  As you stroll through the city with your leashed furry buddy, you will notice that the majority of the structures you pass along your way are houses with a few apartment buildings and co-ops like Ridgewood Gardens scattered amongst them. The terrain can be slightly hilly in some areas, though nothing presents itself as a real challenge. Walkers of all experience levels will find streets to suit their needs. While you are exploring the neighborhood and its many beautiful buildings and greenways, be sure to clean up after your pup in order to keep the area clean for other residents. Overall, there is something for everyone except the most adventurous of hikers.

There are many greenways and parks where you and your dog can relax and spend some quality time together playing a game of fetch or just running around. There are other area parks such as Frontera Park, Principe Park, and the smallest park in NYC. Known as Luke J. Lang Square, this park occupies 0.0002 acres and is located at the point of Fresh Pond Road, 59th Road, and 61st Street. The park honors a local citizen who served in World War I. Most of these parks offer pathways and other areas to explore, though they may require your pup to stay on his leash for your visit to keep him safe.

While they are large, some of the cemeteries in the area may not allow for your rambunctious canine pal, but the areas nearby and around the cemeteries may provide some nice little walking paths or sidewalks. Either way, you'll find some good space to explore at your pup's side.
