Wag! Walkers know Rego Park
Rego Park can be found in Queens bordered by Corona and Elmhurst to the north and Forest Hills to the southeast. This neighborhood was built out of a swamp called the Hempstead Swamp. In the 1650s, Dutch and English farmers settled in this area and farmed using the water that flowed here. When the Real Good Construction Company began developing in the 1920s, the neighborhood was called Rego Park after the first two letters in the first two words of the name. Throughout the 1920s, the area continued to be developed with residential areas and businesses at the perimeters.
This is a diverse neighborhood with lots of different kinds of architecture including apartment buildings, single-family homes, and townhouses. This area is also home to many shopping destinations as well as entertainment like the Drake and Trylon Theatres. Several businesses in this area cater to your dog, including groomers which can give your pup a great look.
What is the terrain like in Rego Park?
Rego Park is a very diverse neighborhood and the experience of walking through different blocks may vary a lot. Near the center of the neighborhood, on the southwest side of the tracks, blocks spread out in a semi-circle pattern making for a very planned and pleasant walk. Homes in this area are single-family homes along the relatively flat terrain.
Buildings are set back from the streets behind little grassy yards that are rarely fenced. The sidewalk is divided by the street at most parts by a divider that is studded with mature trees. This is a lovely area to walk through with your dog on a loose leash or enjoy being on wheels at their side while appreciating the gorgeous architecture and pleasant shade from the mature trees. North of the railroad, the walking is more like city walking with tall apartment buildings on either side and no divider between sidewalk and road.
How many greenways are there in Rego Park?
Along the northeast perimeter of the planned crescent part of the neighborhood, a forest area stretches for miles. Backyards open up directly into this space, so you will need to be careful that you don't wander onto private property. There are also several ball fields in this area as well as grassy fields for you to play on.
This forested strip extends all the way past the south perimeter of Rego Park and opens into the sweeping Forest Park. This huge park provides almost unlimited exploration for you and your dog. Whether you want to stick to the well-maintained trails that wind throughout the park or if you want to go off-trail for some real forest hiking, this space will be an incredible destination for you where you can forget that you are in the city.
If you are looking for something different, several blocks to the east, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park provides lots of space for you to enjoy.
