Wag! Walkers know South Beach
The area of South Beach is located on Staten Island. The neighborhood is, of course, a coastal region that includes a sandy beach, but also incorporates numerous houses, streets, and a large greenway known as Ocean Breeze Park. It is bordered to the northeast by Arrochar with Dongan Hills set just behind it to the west. The eastern border is the beach itself which backs onto Lower Bay. Southwest of South Beach, you’ll find Midland Beach bordered by Seaview Avenue.
You’re limited for pet facilities in South Beach since the area is primarily a beach-centered location. However, in the neighboring Dongan Hills, you’ll find everything you’re after. Dongan Hills Veterinary Practice can be found on Dongan Hills Avenue which is an animal hospital with great reviews that’ll care for your pooch in their time of need. Nearby, you’ll find the Pampered Paws Pet Spa on Hylan Road for grooming services.
What is the terrain like in South Beach?
South Beach is incredibly low lying, making for a stunningly flat and wide-open beach area. Unfortunately, this is also the neighborhood’s downfall since it is regularly flooded and was harshly damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Since then, many of the residents have moved out of the area in fear of a repeat episode, so South Beach is struggling to keep its vibrancy. This can make for beautifully easy breezy walks along the shoreline when the weather is clear, however, it’s disappointing that this area cannot be better utilized.
Due to its location on a flood-plain, the terrain in South Beach is becoming increasingly naturalized to account for the water. Ocean Breeze Park is a large and natural greenway that is often flooded, but because of this, it’s mostly left to its own devices. New Creek Blue Belt also runs through the area collecting rainwater after storms, another waterway which adds to the area’s natural feel.
How many greenways are there in South Beach?
South Beach is lucky to have a large proportion of its land dedicated to green space. Ocean Breeze Park is accessed easily from almost anywhere in the neighborhood, providing the residents with 110-acres of stunning grass and wetlands. You’ll never be short of walking trails here unless, of course, it is flooded following a storm. Please be wary of the weather when passing through Ocean Breeze Park. You don’t want to get caught up to your knees in flood water!
Alternatively, head to the beach itself for some fresh and wide-open space. On busy days, it’s important to look out for dog designated areas as there may be some parts where our canine friends have restricted access. Walk along the shoreline and head north towards the Fountain of the Dolphins for a scenic viewpoint! It’s a great place to relax, breathe in the fresh air, and tire out your little pooch at the same time.
