Sunnyside is a nice neighborhood in the west area of Queens. This neighborhood is comprised primarily of tall, closely packed apartment buildings, with wide sidewalks and no divider between sidewalk and road. Plenty of mature trees make walking through this area pleasant, but the lack of divider between sidewalk and road means you may need to keep your dog on a tighter leash when walking through most of this area.
Where there are townhouses, walking is a little more relaxed due to the townhouses being set back from well-planted little gardens. These gardens are still generally fenced, however, so you are likely not to feel like you have much room walking down the streets of Sunnyside.
The sub-community of Sunnyside Gardens offers wider sidewalks and beautiful tree cover, with slower neighborhood traffic and speed bumps. Walking through this area is one of the most pleasant neighborhood walking experiences in Sunnyside.
Due to the closely-packed buildings and narrow sidewalks with no dividers, walking through the neighborhood streets throughout most of Sunnyside can be a cramped experience for you and your dog. One exception to this is the lovely streets in Sunnyside Gardens. These streets encourage slower traffic with speed bumps and provide pleasant wide sidewalks with lots of mature trees and home set back from the road farther than elsewhere in the neighborhood.
You can also visit Sunnyside Gardens Park, which along with plenty of sports fields also has lots of grassy areas for you to relax with your dog, as well as pleasant places to walk under the tree cover. The little community gardens in this area are extremely charming to look at as well.
Since this neighborhood borders several cemeteries, you can often find places to walk along the perimeter of the cemetery where you can enjoy the wide-open view and also have stretches of road that are unbroken by bisecting traffic.
While Sunnyside has lots of mature tree cover, especially in Sunnyside Gardens, there is not much as far as parks in this area.. One exception is the Sunnyside Gardens Park, which has lots of sports fields but also pleasant paths to walk along and open grassy areas to enjoy with your dog. There are also community gardens here which it can be nice to stroll along with your dog.
For a more extensive park experience you will have to head towards the water, which is a significant walk from Sunnyside but doable if you are a dedicated walker in search of a more natural environment in which to walk. By finding your way to Gantry Plaza State Park, you can find plenty of grassy areas to enjoy with your dog along the coast, and even a dog playground. Your dog will think he's found dog heaven after walking through the tight streets of Sunnyside for so long.
Heading to the coast further up can bring you to Queensbridge Park, which is largely devoted to sports fields but also has a lovely walking path along the water and lots of grassy areas for you to enjoy with your dog.
