Wag! Walkers know Todt Hill
As a largely residential neighborhood, Todt Hill is known as one of the most exclusive and expensive areas of Staten Island. The area is mostly standalone, family homes and one of those houses was actually used in the filming of the cinematic classic, The Godfather! If that doesn't give you a good picture as to how prestigious this area is, then nothing will. Besides residential buildings, this neighborhood is also home to a few restaurants, Reed’s Basket Willow Swamp Park, Deere Park, a few schools, and some churches. Unfortunately, there are no dog-related businesses in this neighborhood, so consider venturing elsewhere for your doggy needs.
Summer and summer-like weather in Todt Hill usually lasts from June to early September. Winter conditions can typically be seen and felt from December to March. New York City and the surrounding boroughs are slightly warmer than upstate New York, so always make sure you are prepared, no matter what the season brings!
What is the terrain like in Todt Hill?
Todt Hill is actually known as being the highest natural point in any New York City borough, sitting on top of a 401-foot-tall hill. However, your walks will range from mostly flat to quite hilly, depending on your walking route around the neighborhood. Many residential streets are quite level, but others are very steep, so you won't have any issues finding some challenging roads to walk if you're more of a hiker than a walker.
The top of the hill, or the summit, is mostly covered with trees and more wooded areas. Reed’s Basket Willow Swamp Park is also centrally located in the neighborhood. The more residential areas, unfortunately, have no sidewalks and not many public, grassy spaces. So, should your pet relieve themselves in someone’s front yard, please make sure you clean up afterwards!
Todt Hill is a triangle-shaped neighborhood with the following borders: Richmond Road, Todt Hill Road, and Staten Island Expressway.
How many greenways are there in Todt Hill?
Todt Hill is sorely lacking in public greenways like some of the other areas in New York tend to be. Reed’s Basket Willow Swamp Park is not incredibly accessible, especially when you may just be walking into the area. However, Deere Park is home to several hiking trails which may be nice if you’re looking for a natural escape from NYC’s more urban environment. There are plenty of areas here to explore and discover if you're invested in a nature hike or jog underneath some shady trees.
There are also several cemeteries in the area, but they are not dog-friendly and should be avoided on walks. You may, instead, utilize the sidewalks or areas outside of the cemeteries if there are some. Additionally, there are several large greenways immediately outside of the neighborhood, including the Saint Francis Woodlands, the Todt Hill Woodlands, and Richmond Parkway. These all have additional hiking trails.
