Utopia was formed when the Utopia Land Company bought around 50 acres of farmland in 1905. They intended to build a community for Jewish families, but the company could not fund the project. Years later, however, the nearby neighborhood of Jamaica began to develop the area.
This densely populated neighborhood is almost entirely residential with a couple of small businesses and restaurants along Utopia Parkway. What is the terrain like in Utopia?
Utopia is a large, flat neighborhood with closely spaced homes. Houses are attractive and midsize, often of a Victorian design with lots of intricate architectural details. Buildings are mostly two stories, and roofs are peaked. Yards are small, with little more than an alley between houses. There are few fences, however, and there is a divider between the sidewalk and the road on both sides.
If you are looking for a change from the neighborhood streets, Kissena Park is nearby. This attractive park has a lot of varied terrain for your dog to explore. The cute little Kissena Lake is a great place for your dog to experience the water for the first time while the alternating forest, grassland, and shrubby areas make for an interesting and diverse walk.
If you want more dense forest to explore, the forest around Potamogeton Pond is dense and mature with well-maintained walking trails throughout.

While there isn’t much in the way of green space within Utopia itself, there are plenty of lovely natural areas to explore nearby.
Kissena Park is within walking or biking distance. The lovely little pond and area around this park is great and you can continue your exploration to the beautiful Queens Botanical Garden and up to the bodies of water around the Flushing Meadows Corona Park. If you and your dog are feeling adventurous, you can journey up to the densely wooded Forest Park.
Going south to the East River offers fascinating exploration as well, although there is less natural area here. To the west of Queens, Cunningham Park and the connected Alley Pond Park both provide lots of forest wilderness and lovely little ponds to explore. You can follow this forest south to the Little Neck Bay which has beautiful marshy areas to explore, as well as a long and well-maintained path along the Cross Island Parkway.
