Rosedale residents speak of this neighborhood like it was and still is the all-American ideal place to grow up. Winters can be difficult with lots of snow and cold temperatures sometimes, but there will still be a lot of days when walking will be possible.
What is the terrain like in Rosedale?
Walking through Rosedale feels like walking through a suburb of any city. You won’t find many neighborhoods with all of the streets lined with sidewalks like in this area, even most of the busier ones. There are even areas on the main roads that have shoulders with some grass. At least enough for your pup to do their business, anyway and it certainly gives them a place to get off the concrete.
In the residential areas, there are wide sidewalks with lots of grass on the shoulders and many big beautiful trees for shade. This makes this urban walk one of the more pleasant ones in New York. To add to the pleasantness of walking through Rosedale, there are no hills and level ground makes walks much easier to enjoy for all levels of fitness, especially those dogs and owners that have a ways to go to be fit enough for the more challenging walks.
How many greenways are there in Rosedale?
Brookville Park is a large park running along the western boundary of the neighborhood. It has a number of hiking trails and runs into Idlewild Park and Hook Creek Park to the south to make one long, continuous green space. However, the trails end at the southern boundary of Brookville Park and both of these parks are mostly marshes and open to canoers.
There are, however, some green spaces here that you and your dog can make use of. North Woodmere Park is also south of Rosedale, but be advised, that is part of Nassau County and dogs are not allowed in their parks. The county does have dog parks to compensate for that, but North Woodmere Park is not among them.
There is also a dog park to the east of Rosedale, but it is only for use of Valley Stream members, so your options for alternatives to neighborhood walks are a bit limited in this area.
