Weather in New York makes walking ideal from spring through fall. The only thing you will want to watch is very hot days, but even then, you can still walk by just avoiding the hottest part of the day. Winters are a bit tougher as snow and ice are common and can make walking very difficult.
The terrain throughout Shore Acres is quite mixed. You won’t find any really big hills, but there are hills here. Mostly they are smaller and will be perfect for getting your heart rate up if you want to combine exercise with walking your dog. For those who really do not feel like sweating, there are plenty of places to go where the walking is easy.
No matter where you walk, keep in mind that your dog has a fitness level as well. If your dog is a bit overweight and has been sedentary, you need to be very careful how you start out. Most of the streets here in Shore acres do have sidewalks, but not all of them have grassy shoulders. That means Sparky will be walking on hard surfaces which should always be kept in mind as well, especially in the summer when concrete can be to hot for their paws.
Shore Acres has three different green spaces to choose from. On the north side next to the water is the Alice Austen House which is both a museum and park. It is on the beach and is connected to Buono Beach which is reputed to be a dog-friendly place. There are paths to walk, so even a nice stroll down the beach can be very relaxing.
On the south end of the neighborhood are two parks. One is White Park which is just a small park with a patch of grass and some trees, but still, if you are walking anywhere near it, it presents an opportunity to let Sparky explore some greenery along the way.
The real prize is Von Briesen Park which is also on the water and is dog-friendly. There is an off-leash area here and, with lots of trees and grass, it is a great place to let your dog just be a dog.
