Wag! Walkers know Silver Lake
Silver Lake is a residential neighborhood located on the west side of Staten Island. There are not a lot of commercial businesses in the region to walk to, however, the St John's University campus and the associated bookstore are located here and there is a large park within walking distance. The residential neighborhood is beautiful to walk through with lots of unique older homes to visit.
The weather on Staten Island can be wet and cold in winter or wet and warm in summer. Take your pick! A warm, waterproof jacket for chilly winter temperatures, rain, sleet, and snow is recommended for dog walkers and maybe for their pooches too if they have short coats, are not acclimatized to cool weather, or don't like getting wet. Summers are hot and humid and breathable fabrics are recommended to avoid becoming overheated. Don't forget to keep an umbrella handy as rain showers frequently occur in this coastal location!
What is the terrain like in Silver Lake?
The neighborhood is thickly vegetated with lots of greenery. Large stately trees line roadways and throw plenty of shade in summer. Residential streets are narrow and there are inclines in the area, although they are not especially steep or difficult for pet owners to climb. Some roads are dead-end streets and will require dog walkers to double back.
Single-family homes are older, with historic architecture and beautifully landscaped yards. There are also multi-story and high rise apartments in the community, especially around the park. Silver Lake is a quiet residential neighborhood with more traffic on main roads. There is a college campus on the south side of the district with landscaped grounds.
How many greenways are there in Silver Lake?
Silver Lake Park is the oldest park on Staten Island and features a golf course, lake, and recreational facilities including tennis courts, football fields, a playground, a soccer field, and a ball diamond. Pet owners will be delighted to find an enclosed dedicated dog run located at Victory Boulevard near the pavilion and directly across from the Parkview Apartments which is a bonus for residents of that complex. The large park has wooded and open areas, lots of trails to explore with your dog around the lake, and over 205 acres of recreational and natural areas.
Adjacent to the Silver Lake Park is Hero Park. This 3-acre memorial park is graced with trees and lawns and recently redone paved pedestrian trails throughout. Sugar Loaf Rock is located in the park and a plaque affixed to the boulder explains the monuments dedicated to local World War I heroes from which the park gets its name.
