Wag! Walkers know South Beach
South Beach is a coastal neighborhood on the East Shore of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City. Directly north of the area is the Verrazano-Narrow bridge that connects the Island with Brooklyn and Queens. It is a largely residential area that is dominated by a huge beach, a 110-acre park known as Ocean Breeze Park, and a high proportion of holiday bungalows.
There are a couple of pet groomers on Sand Lane which runs westward, away from the beach itself. Further up the road, there is Hylan Animal Hospital that offers veterinary services. On the other side of Ocean Breeze Park, near Staten Island Hospital, there is a range of services available for your pooch, including Pampered Paws Dog Spa, a number of pet stores that will provide you with everything your little best friend could need, and another vet practice known as Dongan Hills. The neighborhood is great for dog lovers.
What is the terrain like in South Beach?
Whilst Staten Island is a built-up area, South Beach actually provides a relatively large portion of wide open spaces that are the perfect place for doggy adventures. It is incredibly low lying and flat terrain, which unfortunately has meant that this area is prone to flooding. In order to combat this issue, there is an award-winning bluebelt known as New Creek that serves the area in an attempt to relieve the parks and streets of this dangerous issue.
What this means for your dog walk is that in South Beach, you have the best casual Sunday morning strolls or after work sprints. Why not walk along the flat beach or boardwalk in your sandals on a hot day? There is no need for hiking shoes or practical clothing. This is the perfect spot for an easy-going adventure with your curious pup. New York has a varied climate, so expect snowy, frozen beaches in the winter and heat in the summer.
How many greenways are there in South Beach?
South Beach has a high proportion of greenways compared to the rest of New York City. In particular, Ocean Breeze Park is a sprawling oasis of grasslands and shrub forests with bicycle paths, sand dunes, and wetlands thrown into the mix. Essentially, it is a tidal meadow and therefore, it can become flooded during stormy weather.
There are a few other areas that are appropriate for taking your four-legged friend out and about. These include The Big Field on Norway Avenue, South Beach Wetlands, right next to Ocean Beach Park, and Brady’s Pond Park, next to Grassmere Lake. But perhaps the most exciting of all for your pooch is South Beach itself: a long coastal walk that will bring you both fresh air and enough space to run and explore.
South Beach has all the amenities and open spaces you need to keep your pupper happy. It’s a great space for a break from city life with enough variability to make it suitable for all types.
