St. George is located at the northeastern edge of Staten Island. The famous Staten Island Ferry operates from here as does the Staten Island Railway. Founded in the 1800's, St. George was once a resort mecca in the 1830's with many high-end hotels for the traveling elite to stay. One of the city's finest hotels was known as the Hotel Castleton and was built in 1889, but was sadly destroyed in a fire in 1907. Some famous actors once called St. George home, like Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward. Martin Sheen lived in the same building as the Newman/Woodwards; as a matter of fac,t his son Emilio was born in that very same building (the Art Deco building). St. George is simply beautiful! The city sidewalks are paved with concrete and the streets are black asphalt. While you and your leashed pup explore the grandeur that is St. George, you will note its many Victorian homes at the top of steep hills. There are many varying styles of architecture in the surrounding homes - some Queen-Anne style, some more modern. The neighborhood has a very small town feel though, and it is surrounded by every kind of eatery, small business or shopping you could ever dream of! The harbor borders this lovely town and its breezes can be felt as you walk along the city streets with your pup.
