Wag! Walkers know Downtown
The Brewery District, more traditionally known the Old German Brewing District, is just a little south of the CBD. Housing here is mostly apartments and multi-family housing that dates far back into the annals of history when brewing was in full swing. Much of the more recent housing has come in the form of mixed-use rehabilitation of old industrial buildings or demolition and new construction.
The Whittier Peninsula offers a large park area and a boat launch into the Scioto River. There are several dog-friendly parks close by, as is a single pet supply store while the rest are up in the northern part of town. Living here also puts you in range of a great selection of eateries worth sampling.
The climate in Columbus is one of all four seasons with summer highs in the mid-80s. Winters can be pretty cold with lows averaging in the high teens and low 20s.
What is the terrain like in Downtown?
Like the rest of Columbus, the terrain in the Brewery District is very flat. And much like most of the industrial areas of the city, pavement seems to be the rule of law. The majority of your walks will be on sidewalks unless you go out to Whittier Peninsula and the parks there. Even so, there are still some spaces to get away from the sidewalks and into some green grass to provide some cool footing for your four-legged friend.
The downtown area has a large swathe of main roads and side roads, all interweaving and creating quite an interesting array of streets. It may take some familiarity with the area before you can sufficiently navigate on your own. Luckily, there are plenty of pedestrian crossings where you'll be safe to hop from street to street.
Keep an eye out for traffic during the busier times of day. Rush hour can present some hazards when it comes to walking.
How many greenways are there in Downtown?
If there is one thing the Brewery District has a lot of for being a former industrial area, it has to be green spaces for you and your pup to enjoy. In the center of the area is a one block grass park with a walking path and plenty of room to play.
Go a little further to the west, and you will find the Scioto Greenway, Scioto Audubon Metro Park, and Whittier Peninsula which incorporates the Lower Scioto Park and Boat Launch. The entire area is vast and covered with walking trails, lakes, large grassy fields, and places for the two of you to run around and play. Be sure you keep your pup on a leash and take your bags along as you never know when you might need one.
There are a few small greenways nearby no matter where you venture in this area, so you'll never want for space to play!
