Wag! Walkers know King-Lincoln-Bronzeville
The community of King-Lincoln Bronzeville has historically been an African-American community that is now one of the historic neighborhoods in the city of Columbus. In recent years, the area has been the focus of significant renovation and revitalization efforts to restore it to its former glory.
The area is home to the Ohio State University Hospital and Emergency Room. A large part of the community is given over to a blend of single and multifamily housing including many apartment buildings and there are plenty of restaurants within driving distance along with pet supply stores and many other forms of shopping. Being close to the university hospital means dealing with a lot of the ensuing traffic, so as you are out on your walks, you will need to pay close attention to passing vehicles.
Summers can be hot with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper-80s, but if you prefer the cooler weather, then the sub-freezing temperatures of winter might be more to your tastes.
What is the terrain like in King-Lincoln-Bronzeville?
The terrain in King-Lincoln Bronzeville is what most of us would call urban. The houses are packed together with small yards and lots of shade trees to help keep things cooled down. Walking with your pooch here typically means pounding the pavement on a regular basis. The two of you can hike your way around most of the community easily. There are numerous small parks and vacant lots for you and Fido to walk and play on.
I-71 sits on the western border which could impede walking in that direction beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood, so stick within the community to avoid having to cross such a heavily trafficked area. The other main road to look out for is E Broad Street which can also have a little bit of busy traffic, especially during rush hour.
Luckily, there are plenty of small patches of grassy space to enjoy throughout the neighborhood if your pup needs a quick pit stop.
How many greenways are there in King-Lincoln-Bronzeville?
Within the bounds of King-Lincoln Bronzeville, the only green space you will find is a few smaller parks such as Mayme Moore Park and Beatty Park, both of which will give you just enough space for a quick romp or run.
If you want somewhere green that can provide more opportunities to explore nature, you don’t have terribly far to drive. The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are just to the southeast on US-62 and S Nelson Road. While there is an entrance fee, it's a great place to hang out in the sunshine and walk around in the gardens. There are several small parks along Nelson Road and the Alum Creek where you and Fido can spend time walking and playing on the grass.
Finally, the nearest dog park is the Wheeler Dog Park where there are separate sections for large and small dogs with water fountains and plenty of shade.
