Wag! Walkers know South Hilltop
South Hilltop is a vast residential area made up of single-family homes, apartments, multifamily units, and numerous retail stores. There are several places to eat nearby and a much wider selection in the neighboring communities. The Southwest Square Shopping Center sits on the southern border for those who love spending time in the mall.
South Hilltop is split down the middle by a large strip of woods and a railroad track which can present a bit of an impasse when it comes to walking around on foot. As for parks, there is one in the northern section and the woods between the two halves of the town.
If you like the cold, winters here won't disappoint you. They offer weeks of freezing weather along with a generous amount of snow and ice. Summers, on the other hand, provide temperatures in the 80s and lots of sunny days which are perfect for getting out there and taking a walk.
What is the terrain like in South Hilltop?
Urban residential may not be a term, but if it were, then South Hilltop would be the poster image for it. Carefully laid out grids of residential streets are filled with a wide variety of single and multifamily housing with some retail on the outer boundaries and a mall on the other side of Eakin Road. For the most part, you and your pooch will be walking on pavement. Most of the residential streets have sidewalks you can use along with alleyways between the cross streets. This neighborhood presents lots of opportunities for you to create an incredible array of walking routes; enough that you and your pooch should never get bored with your daily walks.
For a shy dog, you'll want to avoid Harrisburg Pike, the main road which runs through the community. It is likely to have much faster traffic which can make it difficult to cross safely. Choose alternate routes when walking.
How many greenways are there in South Hilltop?
There are two green spaces in the community. The first is Hauntz Park on Sullivan Avenue. Hauntz Park is large enough for a football field and plenty of grass leftover. Providing you keep Fido on a leash and clean up after them, you will be welcome to come to the park for walks and playtime.
Splitting the two halves of South Hilltop is a section of woods running on either side of the railroad track. There are trails leading into the woods at the end of Red Avenue. Taking your pup here for walks from time to time is a good way to give their paws a break from the pavement and, you never know, you might get to see a train or two rumble by!
On the east side of the southern section you and Fido can go for walks in the Green Lawn Cemetery, but your pup will need to remain on a leash to do so.
