Wag! Walkers know Southern Orchards
Southern Orchards is a primarily residential neighborhood just south of I-70 and the Nationwide Children's Hospital. The community is home to few retail businesses and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. There are several small parks within the community and the Scioto River is less than twenty minutes away.
For those of you who like to dine out, there are plenty of restaurants within that same distance with most of them being to the west in neighboring German Village. Pet supply stores are a bit more of a challenge as the bulk are on the northwest side.
One of the great things about living in Southern Orchards is the weather or, at least, three out of four seasons. Spring through fall offer spectacular weather with lots of sunshine and warm weather. However, Old Man Winter sweeps in with plenty of sub-freezing temperature and more than enough snow and ice to make your daily walks a bit dicey.
What is the terrain like in Southern Orchards?
Like most inner suburbs of any city, the streets in Southern Orchards are laid out in a basic grid pattern with each street tightly packed with a range of single and multi-family homes. Thankfully, those who originally developed the area made sure that each block has sidewalks on both sides of the street. Talk about adding a bonus to terrain that is often described as being boring or not challenging!
E Livingston Avenue is the main road through the area. With it brings a few hazards in the form of high speed traffic and lack of any real pedestrian crossings to help you navigate your way around. A few smaller main roads are within the neighborhood which make for less tricky areas to cross.
Most of the retail establishments can be found on the west side, so try to stick to the east end of the neighborhood for a quieter stroll.
How many greenways are there in Southern Orchards?
Sadly, Southern Orchards comes up very short on green space. There is only one tiny park in the neighborhood along with a few vacant lots.
Martin Park is a small family park on E Kossuth Street with a playground and a small area of grass. Instead, try venturing to the north on the other side of E Livingston below the hospital where you can find Livingston Park. Livingston Park is large with walking trails and vast areas of grass. There is a playground for the kids and lots of shade trees for those hot summer days. To use this park, your pup must be on a leash and you must carry your own bags to clean up behind them. This is especially important as the park is where parents often take their children to play while visiting siblings in the hospital and no one wants their kids to step in or fall on a pile of doggy doo-doo.
