Wag! Walkers know Southwest
Southwest is a large community south of Columbus with I-71 running through it. A large section of the area is given over to waste treatment in the form of landfills, water treatment plants, and a limestone quarry. There are several residential neighborhoods within Southwest, most of which appear to be the result of planned communities.
There are a few restaurants in the area and pet supply stores are within driving distance as is the Southwest Square shopping center. There are only a few small parks and one large cemetery with walkways.
Summer is a beautiful time to get out early in the morning to go for your walks before the heat of the 80-degree days starts to set in. Winters can be more challenging as temperatures hover around the freezing mark with snow and ice. To make things better for your pooch, teach them to walk in doggy boots as they can protect their paws from frostbite!
What is the terrain like in Southwest?
The terrain in the residential areas of this neighborhood is very urban in that the communities have modest yards, sidewalks for the two of you to go walking along, and little parks here and there for a change of pace. These are all very much family-oriented neighborhoods with lots of places to go walking with trails scattered here and there. However, the bulk of your walks with your pooch will be on the sidewalks running through your particular neighborhood.
I-71 is a large highway to the east which should be avoided if you're on foot with your dog at your side. Fast moving traffic can be difficult to navigate and you can find better options within the smaller subdivisions that offer quiet streets and curvy roads to explore. There are a few small hills up towards Willow Creek, but they shouldn't be too steep for the majority of pets and people.
How many greenways are there in Southwest?
Southwest is filled with little corner parks and small green spaces where you and Fido might find enough room for a short walk or a little playtime. Of course, there is the Green Lawn Cemetery in the northwest corner. Here, you will find acres of lawns and seemingly endless pathways to walk along. Be sure you clean up any messes your pup leaves and respect the graves.
To the east is the Lou Berliner Sports Park where you will find numerous baseball diamonds and lots of grass for you and your pup to play on.
If you don’t mind crossing the Scioto River, you and Fido will find the many acres that make up the Whittier Peninsula, the Scioto Greenway, and the Scioto Audubon Metro Park. These parks offer vast areas of grass to play on and plenty of trails for you and your pooch to hike along on a bright, sunny summer day.
