Alameda is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Portland due to its rich history and beautiful homes. The neighborhood is close to the downtown area, making it an easy commute. The area is also known for being quiet due to being almost entirely a residential neighborhood.
There are advantages to having no amenities in the neighborhood but, fortunately, all of your important amenities such as pet stores, groomers, and restaurants are just blocks away. Your pup will even be happy to know that there is an off-leash dog park where they can run to their heart's content.
The weather is mostly mild throughout Portland. It can get a bit warm in the summer, but it never stays too hot for long. Your biggest roadblocks are the Pacific storms which can pack a lot of rain and even some wind. This can make walking unpleasant but luckily, these types of storms will only come in on occasion.
Alameda straddles the Alameda Ridge which means that there is a variety of terrain for just about every fitness type. The ridge can be a challenge for beginners, but to the south and north of the ridge, there is plenty of manageable terrain.
If you are looking for a challenging walk for you and your overactive pooch, the ridge has some great elevation changes that will be enough to challenge just about anyone. Just make sure that your dog is up for it! If they have been more of a couch pup, you may want to introduce these grueling hills just a little bit at a time. While your pup will faithfully follow you anywhere, they cannot tell you if their paws are hurting or if being out of shape is making it hard for them to climb the steep terrain.
This area is full of nice landscaping. Sidewalks with grass and trees make for a pleasant walk.
Within Alameda, you won’t find any greenways, but if you live up on the ridge, you will be happy to find Wilshire Park just on the other side of 33rd Avenue. This park is notable for its 14 acres of grass and trees, but what your dog will be most interested in is the access to the off-leash area. If you want your pup to get some exercise, this is the best way to go about it! There are also paved and unpaved paths if you would rather wander a bit yourself.
Grant Park is at the south end just outside of Alameda and also has an off-leash dog park as well as a variety of trails. The park has a total of almost 20 acres to explore and both paved and unpaved paths. Both parks also have playgrounds for the kids and picnic tables to rest at after you and your pup are done playing hard.
