Wag! Walkers know Downtown
Downtown is a highly walkable district in Portland, Oregon. This district is packed with retail shops, boutiques, theaters, museums, restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs as well as tourist attractions and markets.
Dog-friendly restaurants in the downtown area that will let your pooch join you in their outdoor seating venues include Paddy’s Bar and Grill, Rock Bottom Brewery, Mother’s Bistro and Bar, Henry’s 12th Street Tavern, Olive or Twist, and Tilt.
When walking in Portland with your dog, you will enjoy warm, sunny summers. However, winters can be cool and wet. Having good, waterproof outdoor wear will ensure that you are not prevented from taking your dog out on cool, rainy days. Snow is rare and does not usually stay long, however, temperatures at or below the freezing mark coupled with precipitation can result in icy walkways, so use caution, wait for daytime heating to thaw surfaces, or have footwear with good traction available.
What is the terrain like in Downtown?
Downtown Portland is a highly developed urban area with high rise buildings. In spite of its artificial nature, the area has large trees along streets and is well landscaped with many greenways. Streets in the area are narrow, often one way, and may have bike lanes or public transportation rail lines along them.
The downtown area is bordered on the east by the Willamette River and the west and south by an interstate freeway. There are overpasses crossing the freeway and nine bridges in the area crossing over the river. The district is relatively level with only some small gentle inclines that do not impede pedestrians and pets.
Sidewalks and pedestrian ways are plentiful in the area, so you and your dog have safe, separate walkways for strolls. The area is compact which adds to its walkability with most city blocks being only 200 feet per side which is less than other major urban centers in similar cities.
How many greenways are there in Downtown?
Downtown Portland has many excellent greenways, the largest of which is the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. This park stretches along the river and occupies just under 40 acres. Hiking trails along the greenway are popular with joggers, dog walkers, inline skaters, and cyclists. There is a fountain that people like to play in, recreational facilities, and events like concerts, a farmers market, and fireworks. There are five zones and several landmarks in the park with views of the river and boats along the waterway make a beautiful backdrop.
A greenway runs between the north and southbound lanes of Park Avenue, extending for several blocks and allowing people and pets to traverse the region on a grassy, tree shaded area. Several small squares and parks in the area include Lownsdale Square, Keller Fountain Park, Pioneer Courthouse Square, and Director Park.
There is an off-leash, enclosed dog park in the Pearl District that is part of Fields Park where your dog can play loose with other area canines.
