Wag! Walkers know Grant Park

Grant Park is a primarily residential community in the northeast section of Portland. The main feature of this neighborhood is Grant Park and there are two schools located nearby. Commercial areas along Sandy Boulevard have many shops, restaurants, and other services within walking distance and there is even a pet grooming salon and pet supply store located on this busy thoroughfare. There are grocery stores located in the southern section of the Grant Park neighborhood for locals to travel to on foot.

Walking the neighborhood with your dog, residents will experience a variety of weather. Summers are mostly dry and sunny, although some rain is possible. Fall weather begins to cool off but as winter encroaches, locals should be prepared with rain gear and warm jackets. Cool temperatures, rain, and even occasional snow occur during winter months. Icy conditions can occur during cold snaps and make walking treacherous, so use caution and be prepared with warm outerwear and good footwear.

What is the terrain like in Grant Park?

Grant Park is the neighborhood located around the famous park of the same name. Bordered by Alameda on the north, Rose City Park on the east, Hollywood and Laurelhurst on the south, and Irvington to the west, this is a fairly large neighborhood with lots of residential housing.

Homes in the area were developed in the early 20th century and there are many vintage style homes that lend character to the neighborhood. Houses feature Craftsman, Cape Cod, Old Portland, and Bungalow style architectures. Private properties are heavily landscaped with lawns, large shade trees, and plenty of greenery. Vegetation is so thick that sometimes it is difficult to see the houses.

Residential streets are narrow and peaceful.  These streets make ideal thoroughfares to stroll with your pet. Streets in the region have sidewalks separate from roadways and often grassy berms creating safe walkways. The terrain is fairly flat and there are no steep hills to climb on walks.

How many greenways are there in Grant Park?

The centerpiece of the Grant Park neighborhood is the 19-acre Grant Park. Named for Ulysses S. Grant, this park has a unique children's sculpture garden paying homage to author Beverly Cleary's fictional characters with bronze sculptures from these popular children's books. A fountain and public artworks add to the interest of this park. The park is associated with the Grant High School property and includes athletic facilities and fields. There is a swimming pool, baseball field, football field, soccer field, a playground, and a lighted running track located here.

Park amenities like paved and unpaved walking trails, restrooms, and picnic tables are available in the park and provide facilities for dog walkers to use. Local Grant Park canines enjoy the 1.5-acre off-leash area. This area does not have a containment fence and pups that use the park should have good off leash recall and socialization with people and other dogs to utilize this space.
