Hazelwood is a residential and commercial neighborhood located on the east side of Portland, Oregon, just over a 15-minute commute from the central business district of the city with accessibility by a public transportation rail line. A main commercial thoroughfare, 122 Avenue, runs north to south through the community and has shopping centers, a mall, and many restaurants, shops, and services that are within walking distance for area residents. 

Pet owners will find two veterinary clinics in the region, Gateway Veterinary Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital, that can be reached on foot. 

Portland, Oregon has plenty of wet, rainy weather in the fall, winter, and spring. Keep rain gear handy so that you can venture out in wet weather. If your dog doesn't like to get wet, you can even get a doggie umbrella or rain slicker to keep their fur dry. Winters are cool with temperatures usually above freezing, however, when the temperatures drop, wet conditions can result in icy walkways.

Hazelwood occupies 4.04 square miles and has a population of approximately 23,462. It is located east of Interstate 205  There are also busy, heavily trafficked thoroughfares and a commercial corridor running north to south along 122 Avenue where vehicular traffic can be an issue.  

Public transportation train tracks run along East Burnside Street and should only be crossed at controlled pedestrian crossings. The Glendoveer Golf Course is situated on the northeast corner of the community and provides a large manicured green space. The terrain is fairly leve, although there are some slight inclines in some places. Dogs and their owners should not have trouble traveling on foot as there are no steep hills to contend with.

Most of the homes in the area are moderately sized, single-family dwellings on well landscaped and maintained properties. Due to the climate, there are large shade trees along residential streets and throughout the community to take cover from the midday sun.

Hazelwood canines will enjoy East Holladay Park which is located in the northeast section of the neighborhood and is a pet-friendly greenway.  The park is 5.5 acres in size and is a dog-friendly, designated off-leash area. The park is not securely enclosed, so your pup must have good recall to play loose in the park and should be well socialized. There are paved walking paths and a playground. Bring your water and waste bags so you can pick up after your pet! 

Ventura Park is located on the southern part of Hazelwood and provides 7.25 acres of greenway. The park has open areas with large shade trees and looping paved walking paths that you can enjoy with your leashed pet. The park also serves as a basic earthquake emergency communication node and has many recreational amenities, fields, and facilities. There is some public art in the park, a playground, and an accessible restroom.
