Bordering the northeast section of Portland, Oregon, the Parkrose neighborhood is adjacent to the airport and only a few blocks south of the river. The area has a lot of shopping as well as plenty of residential areas, making it an ideal area for families and their four-legged companions.
There are plenty of restaurants and stores and there are pet stores available just to the west and east of the neighborhood along the shopping strips. There are also plenty of veterinarians throughout the neighborhood as well as on the outskirts should your pup catch a cold or need shots.
The weather, overall, will not stop you from enjoying a walk year-round. Summers can get pretty warm, but winters rarely see snow or ice. It can get rainy, but it is rare that there is not at least some time during the day to get a stroll in between rain showers.
The terrain through Parkrose is primarily very gentle. There are a few rolling hills which will help you build up a bit of muscle strength and get your heart rate up, but nothing that is insurmountable, even for a beginner. Most of these hills are towards the north end of Parkrose. If you want flatter terrain, take a stroll farther south.
There are not a lot of sidewalks in this area, so it is important to use caution when walking. Some areas have wide shoulders, but the shoulders are often used for parking. You will be walking on a mixture of asphalt and gravel with some grass.
There is an airport in the neighborhood, so you may find noise to be your biggest obstacle. If your dog never gets used to the sound of airplanes taking off, you can head to the part of the neighborhood south of Sandy Boulevard. Neighbors say it is a bit quieter there!
The only park in Parkrose itself is Senn’s Dairy Park, named after the business that used to reside on this land. There is a lot of grass, trees, and a path, so it can make a nice place to stop if you happen to be walking by.
There are other options in the area for places to take your dog if you would like to give them a good walk in nature. Joseph Wood Hill Park is a 2-acre park that is part of Rocky Butte Park. Rocky Butte is a volcanic cinder cone butte that offers spectacular views of the city and river. There are plenty of hiking opportunities and the top of the butte has an elevation of 613 feet, so this is your opportunity to get a great workout in.
Just to the west of Parkrose is Johnson Lake Property, a large recreational area with plenty of hiking through forests for the two of you to enjoy.
