Wag! Walkers know Allegheny West
Located in North Philadelphia, Allegheny West was once a major industrial hub, but like many other areas of Philly, as industries moved out and shut down, the city went into significant decline. Some of the empty industrial regions such as the old Budd Steel facility can be seen in a number of feature films. Housing here is mostly row housing laid out in a perfect grid. To the west of the community, there are two extensive cemeteries and Fairmount Park. Pet stores will take a bit of a drive. For those of you who like to eat out, there are several restaurants in the community.
What kind of weather do you like? Summers are sunny with highs in the upper 80s and rain showers. Do you prefer it cold? You can get that here too! Winters can give you days on end of freezing temperatures and lower, snow storms, and the risk of a serious nor'easter blowing in.
What is the terrain like in Allegheny West?
The terrain here is essentially a repeat of just about any other area of Philly. It's flat! When you live in a neighborhood that is block after block laid out in a perfect grid and the ground barely changes, walks could become more than a little dull. If it is boring to you, then your pup is likely to feel the same way. After all, they can only handle sniffing the same tree so many times.
Be sure you walk around different blocks, turn left one day, turn right the next, and mix it all up to create a never-ending array of walks, ensuring neither of you can ever lay claim to being bored. One thing to keep in mind is that in the summer, the pavement is likely to be hot enough to burn paws. To avoid this, take your walks early in the morning when everything is still cool from the night before.
How many greenways are there in Allegheny West?
When it comes to greenways, Allegheny Park has a bit of a mix. There are several empty lots in the area and plenty of grass and trails around the Abbotsford Homes neighborhood. But the most extensive section of green space is the two vast cemeteries to the west between the community and the Schuylkill River. There are several pathways running through the cemeteries for you to walk on. Be sure that if you take your pup walking on these paths, keep them on a leash and carry plenty of bags to clean up.
The good news is that if you take the paths leading south in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, they will take you to Fairmount Park with athletic fields and the Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse. The park has several different trails for you and your pup to check out and the East Park Reservoir with a path that goes all the way around it.
