Wag! Walkers know East Passyunk
East Passyunk is a small neighborhood in Philly whose history is filled with both Irish and Italian Immigrants and many of these families still call the area home. This is a heavily built-up residential area with mostly single-family row houses that have tiny backyards and front stoops. There are plenty of wide sidewalks to walk on, but as for grass, you won't find much of that around here. In fact, if you want any sizeable areas of grass, you are going to have to drive out of the area to find it. The nearest dog-friendly parks are to the north of the community as are pet supply stores.
Summer is a glorious time of year here with mild weather and weeks of no rain. Temperatures average in the 80s with moderate humidity levels. Winters, however, can be cold and inhospitable with temperatures staying below freezing for extended periods of time with plenty of ice and snow.
What is the terrain like in East Passyunk?
The area here is flat and, for the most part, a concrete jungle. Beyond a few tiny patches of grass in backyards, there is little to nothing to see beyond concrete and pavement. This type of terrain certainly isn't very pup-friendly, but when it's all you have to work with, you have to be creative and start your walks as soon as your pooch is old enough. This will help toughen his paws for long walks on the pavement. Try to choose your routes very carefully here and stick to heavily trafficked areas for your safety. Be sure you carry plenty of baggies to clean up after your dog!
Keep in mind that as the outside temperatures heat up, so too does the pavement. If you can't hold the back of your hand on the pavement for at least 15 seconds, it is too hot for your puppy's pads and could cause severe damage to them.
How many greenways are there in East Passyunk?
Living in East Passyunk means living in an area that has no greenways whatsoever in it! In fact, this community is truly the perfect representation of a residential concrete jungle. If you want to see more than a speck of grass, you have no choice but to get in your car and drive. And if you are going to do this, you might as well head down to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park. Once known as League Island Park, the area was first intended for use by those moving into the neighborhood. Today, the park features a lagoon, a small pond, the American Swedish Historical Museum, and a 146-acre golf course. It also features lots of trails and plenty of grass to romp around as well.
To the north, there are two small dog-friendly parks on the west side. Columbus Square and the Capitolo Playground are where you and your dog can find at least a little space to romp.
