Wag! Walkers know Elkins Park
Elkins Park is a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is only nine miles north of the downtown area. In fact, it only takes twenty minutes to get into Philadelphia's city center using local transportation like the train. Home to a large Orthodox Jewish community, Elkins Park is an affordable neighborhood with beautiful homes, large mature trees, and beautiful landscaping. Because of the large Jewish influence, Elkins Park has plenty of grocery stores, bakeries, and restaurants serving kosher food. There is also a beautiful synagogue that was designed by famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Beyond being a beautiful residential community, Elkins Park also has several commercial areas, particularly along Old York Road, where you will find several places of worship, local and chain restaurants, a few schools, and condominiums. Additionally, located centrally in the neighborhood, you will find a local veterinarian at World of Animals at Elkins Park. There are also two pet supply stores located just north of the neighborhood.
What is the terrain like in Elkins Park?
Walking through the residential sections of Elkins Park should be lovely, leisurely, and safe. Most of the neighborhood has well-maintained sidewalks on both sides of the street, street lights for those early morning or evening walks, and large, mature trees that help provide shade during the sunny, summer days. Many of the sidewalks are also lined with grass, in case your pup needs to take a quick pit stop during your walks.

The commercial areas, like Old York Road, will have significantly more traffic and traffic that is traveling at higher speeds. While there are sidewalks, this four-lane road might frighten your pup if they are a bit skittish.
Additionally, there are a few hills throughout the neighborhood, but nothing that should be too steep or strenuous for you or Fido. However, if you or your pup have mobility issues, be sure to review your normal walking routes prior to grabbing the leash and heading out the door!
How many greenways are there in Elkins Park?
Elkins Park has a few parks located in the neighborhood and is surrounded by several more! One of the largest greenways is actually two adjacent parks: Ogontz Park and High School Park. High School Park is an 11-acre native ecosystem run by a local non-profit organization. Ogontz Park has more recreational space with athletic facilities and a small playground.

Wall Park, another significant area in Elkins Park, is a 13-acre park with a few sporting facilities, a skate park, a playground, an ice skating rink, and a spray pool. This park is also home to the Richard Wall House Museum, a historic site dating back to the colonial era.
The third local greenway, Russell Park, is a more traditional public park with a playground, places to rest or picnic, and space for general recreation. Thankfully, there are several other greenways surrounding Elkins Park, including Parkview Park, Tacony Creek Park, Burholme Park, Alverthorpe Park, and Foxchase Manor Park.
