like many other areas of Philly, when industry
started to leave the area, so too did the
money. Along with the jobs and money leaving
the community, the people moved on for greener pastures, leaving Franklinville to fall into decay and ruin. Today, the area
continues to decline and suffer from moderate urban
decay. This is not the kind of neighborhood
you should walk alone in, even if you take your pup on the walks with you.
The streets
and sidewalks are poorly maintained, but
at least they give the two of you somewhere to walk. The community has large
areas where entire blocks of row houses have been
demolished. Hunting Park sits in the middle of the community and offers trails and grass to walk
on. There are plenty of eateries in the neighborhood to try, but if you want a
decent pet supply store, plan to drive to Port Richmond
or Brewerytown.
What is the terrain like in Franklinville?
The terrain here is mostly flat and paved but is, for the
most part, showing some significant urban
decay. The sidewalks are falling apart, cracked, and filled with weeds which makes for a tricky place to navigate during your daily walks. However, living in Franklinville
leaves you with little choice in the matter. For your own safety, you should do your best to keep your walks to daylight hours
and always try to take someone else with you. Remember to keep a very close eye on the pavement itself for anything that could
damage your dog's paws like broken glass, cans, broken bottles, or even discarded needles.
A much safer and better option would be to hop in the car and cruise to Hunting
Park. This 10-acre park offers numerous sports fields, a running track, a pool, and a walking track that goes all the way around the park for
the two of you to get your exercise on.

Franklinville offers more in the way of green space than
many other areas of Philly. Unfortunately, many of these come from the demolition
of entire residential blocks as the neighborhood fell into disrepair. However,
these areas are not only private property, but may also not be the safest place
for you to visit. Not only could one of you become injured,
but you could get into trouble for trespassing.
Beyond Hunting Park, you are
within easy driving distance of Fairmount
Park where there are acres of forest and miles of trails for you to explore.
This is an excellent and very safe place to go walking and a great way to get out in the
fresh air together. The park is right next door to the Philadelphia Zoo and across
the Schuylkill River from the other half of the park and the Please Touch
Museum along with many more acres of grass and trails.
