Germantown Morton is part of the Germantown neighborhood, founded in the 1600s. The town became incorporated into Philadelphia in 1854. George Washington lived in the community for a period of time. Today, the area is an odd mix of well-kept single-family homes and run down row houses. Unfortunately, the area also has a reputation for being high on crime. Depending on which part of town you happen to live in, you may not want to go walking with your dog alone. The community is very diverse, allowing for an interesting selection of cultural restaurants to choose from. Dog-parks and pet stores are also within driving distance.

The climate here is quite chilly with January temperatures hovering in the mid-20s and plenty of snow to play in. But at the same time, winter can bring with it plenty of sleet and ice, making walks challenging. Summer, on the other hand, is warm and sunny with temperatures hitting the mid-80s.

The terrain in Germantown Morton ranges from nothing but concrete to large yards and green spaces such as parks and vacant lots. It is flat, for the most part, but what you have to live with depends almost entirely on what part of town you live in. The rowhouses are surrounded by concrete, but the rest of the town offers front and backyards as well as sidewalks for you to go strolling along.

Just because it's flat here doesn't mean you can't still get in plenty of exercise. You just have to be a bit more creative and look for new areas to check out, go around the block in the opposite direction, and walk around someone else's block. Add in an extra block or two and build up the distance slowly until you and your pup can enjoy long strolls together in the evening or first thing in the early morning hours.

Germantown Morton is one of the greener communities in the Greater Philly area with most of the single-family homes having larger backyards with plenty of trees. There is a pair of small parks with just enough room for your pup to get in a little romp time.

Thankfully, the Awbury Arboretum is just to the north. The arboretum covers 55 acres and is laid out in several wide-open spaces with large clusters of amazing trees. It is a fantastic place to take all of the members of your family, including the four-legged one for a walk among the shrubs, trees, and carefully designed gardens. Once you enter the park, it can be hard to imagine that you are still in the city. This space offers you a peaceful oasis in the center of a bustling community that is undergoing a rebirth. One visit and you might find yourself wondering why you have never been here before!
