Wag! Walkers know Germantown West Central
West Central Germantown is a blend of older single-family neighborhoods dating back to when the community was first established by German immigrants in the mid to late 1600s. Today, this well-established community is a pleasant blend of homes and small businesses. There are a number of outstanding eateries to grab a bite to eat and several historic homes. With sidewalks in almost every section of the community, you should have no problem getting your daily walks in. Along with several green spaces in the town, there is a dog park and plenty of trails to follow in Clifford Park and Vernon Park.
The community is well-kept and the weather most of the year is ideal for walking. However, winters here can be harsh with temperatures dipping well below freezing, especially when there are lake effect snows and winds blowing from the northwest. Summers, on the other hand, are warm with temperatures in the 80s and moderate humidity levels.
What is the terrain like in Germantown West Central?
The terrain in West Central Germantown is comprised of lightly rolling hills with an excellent selection of greenways for you and your dog to explore. However, for the most part, unless you head to one of the parks, you and your pup will have to hit the pavement.
The one thing you must to keep in mind is that walking on the sidewalk can be hard on the pads under your pup's paws. It's best to start out with short walks to help toughen them up. You should also be aware that after the ambient temperatures reach the mid to upper 70s, the sidewalk can be hot enough to burn paw pads. The best time of day to go walking with your pooch is during the early morning hours. Not only will the sidewalks be cooled off, but there tends to be less traffic on the roads, making for much more peaceful and enjoyable strolls.
How many greenways are there in Germantown West Central?
This community is filled with green spaces. Some are private such as the large yards many of the homes here have while others like Clifford Park and Vernon Park are open to the public. Vernon Park in the northwest corner of the community is the home of Vernon House and the Wister Mansion, a community resource center, an activity center for seniors, the Black Writer's Museum, and much more. There are trails for you and your pup to enjoy walking along, acres of grass to play on, and more!
To the south of the community lies Clifford Park where you will also find the Clifford Dog Park. The park is more of a series of trails including the loops around the Thomas Mansion and takes a half hour to complete. The rest a large grassy area, but there is nowhere to let your pooch run around free as dogs should be kept on their leash at all times.
