Wag! Walkers know Germany Hill
Germany Hill is a small community on a hillside in the Roxbury district of Philadelphia. There are many wonderful things that come with living here. You are close to restaurants, pet supply stores, and parks. Housing here includes urban townhouses, fixer uppers, and brand-new homes. Despite efforts to bring in another 50 homes, the neighborhood banded together to put a stop to it and save the last remaining green space. This is a surprisingly affordable community with the median home price in the low $200k range.
The climate here runs through a full four seasons. Spring and fall are glorious, one bursting with new life and color, the other celebrating the end of summer in all of its golden glory. Winters can be harsh with sub-freezing temperatures and plenty of ice, sleet, and snow. Summers are quite pleasant with temperatures in the high 80s and plenty of great sunshine too for you to walk in.
What is the terrain like in Germany Hill?
The entire community sits on a small hill surrounded by trees. The streets are lined with sidewalks separated from the roads by grass strips. Walks can become a bit boring if all you do is stick to the streets, but only if you don't make an effort to change your daily walking routine. A large part of the community is buried under a thick canopy of shade trees, making it a great place for you to go walking in the summer. However, keep in mind you need to wear light-colored clothing on your walks as it is always twilight along parts of the road leading through this section of Germany Hill.
Walking on paved surfaces can be challenging for both of you. It can make your joints and ache at first, but more importantly, the rough surface can scrape sensitive puppy paws if you try to go too far, too fast.
How many greenways are there in Germany Hill?
Green space is one of the reasons why the community fought against further development. The area has a large section of hardwood shade trees with homes buried deep in their shade. However, if you prefer to walk in places where you won't have to worry about motorized traffic, you have only to pack your pup in the car and head to Wissahickon Valley Park. The park is an 1,800-acre gorge with 57 miles of trails for the two of you to explore. You can easily find yourselves lost in the peace and quiet as you hike along the creek.
Along the trails, you will cross a number of stone bridges that date back to the times of the WPA. There is also a pair of statues, one dedicated to the Leni Lenape Tribe who lived here and one to the Quakers who fell in love with this area of Pennsylvania.
