The weather in Philadelphia is variable. Plenty of warm, sunny days make for pleasant walking conditions, but rain is also frequent and requires a good waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear for pedestrians to stay dry. Although winters are not cold, some snow can frequently occur and make walking conditions slippery. Summers in Philadelphia can be unpleasantly hot and humid and breathable clothing while avoiding walking at the height of the day will allow pedestrians to mitigate uncomfortable conditions.
Residences in the area include apartments and row houses, mostly two-to-three stories in height. There is some light industry on the southwest end and many streets transect the neighborhood with commercial activity along them. There is plenty of traffic in the community and dog walkers will need to keep their dogs leashed and be vigilant for traffic.
Front Street on the east has an elevated train track running above it which creates a unique streetscape. Structures were developed at various times and for different uses and exhibit diverse architecture. There are some lots and properties in the industrial section where no current development exists that provide open areas.
Norris Square Park is located in the Hartranft area. This 5.8-acre square style historic park features mature shade trees including sycamore, oak, and maple trees. The square is lined with historic buildings that provide a unique backdrop. There are paved walking paths that radiate from the central circular area where a playground is currently situated with benches. Dog walkers can take their dog through the square on paved paths but canines must remain off the playground structures.
Fairmount Park is the nearest large urban park with lots of greenways to enjoy with your furry friend. It is situated about a 15-minute drive to the west. This great park has 2,000 acres of rolling parkland, trees, open spaces, and miles of pedestrian paths to explore with your pup. It is a great spot for dog walkers! There are also many recreational facilities and special events at this exciting park located along the Schuylkill River.
