The NE Philly Discount Shopping District is an area of the city that virtually everyone knows about. Why? Because it is the home of the Franklin Mills Mall, one of the hottest tourist attractions in the state. The mall has dozens of outlet stores for you to enjoy shopping and saving money in. Like most areas in which a mall exists, there are several residential areas all around it. Most of the homes are a more modern take on row-housing, but more recently, a small number of single-family homes have sprung up. As for pet supply stores and dog parks, you have no choice but to hop in the car and go for a ride.
Summers here are enjoyable with temperatures hanging out in the 80s with the occasional rainy day. Winters here are a little on the harsh side with temperatures in the freezing range for weeks and plenty of snow to play in.
Despite being home to the Franklin Mills Mall and the accompanying parking lots and outlier stores, the area offers a nice balance of green and paved surfaces. But, like many other areas of the city, the NE Philly Discount Shopping District is flat. Traffic flowing into the mall rarely affects the residential areas as the highway has on and off ramps right at the mall. This helps keep these neighborhoods quieter and safe for you and your dog to go walking.
As for places to walk, each community is designed in such a way as to give you a few alternatives as to which direction to take. You can even walk from one community to the next as there are sidewalks leading the way. Do keep in mind that paved surfaces can become hot enough to burn your pup's paws on hotter days. Try taking your walks earlier in the morning when things are still cool from the night.
The one thing that makes this area unusual beyond the massive mall is the sheer amount of green space the developers left intact and built into the area. One of the best green spaces to take your dog walking in is the Poquessing Valley Park. This park covers 32 acres weaving between communities and incorporates the Poquessing Creek Trail that runs from the park for 1.5 miles to the Junod Playground. The trail is paved, but there is plenty of grass for your dog to run on.
There are several sports fields all around the mall dispersed among the various neighborhoods. Most have walking trails for the two of you to use and plenty of grass to run around on. Be sure you keep your pup on a leash and carry plenty of waste bags in case they decide to leave a little surprise while you are out hiking.
