Wag! Walkers know Olde Kensington
Olde Kensington is in the north part of Philadelphia. It is bordered by North Philadelphia East to the north, Fishtown to the east, Yorktown to the west, and Poplar to the south. This neighborhood was once primarily industrial, but as factories have closed, old facilities are being turned into loft housing and work spaces. This makes for a unique feel of transition throughout the neighborhood.
There are plenty of businesses in this area to cater to Fido. A pet supply store is nearby so you can get all of your food, toys, treats, and accessories for your dog at an affordable price and have your pup groomed at the same time. For the dog in need of some behavioral modification or stimulation, Wag the Dog Trainer is nearby while the Palmer Doggie Depot is an essential outlet for your urban pooch. Here, your dog can run around with their friends off-leash.
What is the terrain like in Olde Kensington?
Walking through Olde Kensington is an interesting experience. There is great diversity in the type of buildings from block to block. In some areas, charming brick three-story townhomes are sheltered by mature tree cover. Other blocks are devoted to modern townhomes with elegant wrought iron balconies. On other blocks, there might be an abandoned factory warehouse next to a warehouse renovated for loft housing and across from an entire block gone to grass with factories long ago destroyed and no new construction begun.
Still, other blocks have single-family two or three-story homes flush together. Most are historic with brick Romanesque construction but others are extremely modern, looking out of place on these blocks.
Throughout the neighborhood, sidewalks are wide, but there are rarely dividers between sidewalk and road so you will keep your dog on a close leash throughout this neighborhood unless you come to an open grassy area.
How many greenways are there in Olde Kensington?
There are several empty grassy lots and regional parks in this area. Just southeast of the neighborhood, you can find the lovely little Penn Treaty Park. This park’s waterfront fields are a wonderful place to hang out with your dog on a hot summer day. A few blocks down the river, there are several acres of grassy and shrub-covered area with trails developed by frequent walking. This is not an official park, but it is a lovely natural area on the water and it is clear that is is frequently used recreationally. Be careful to look out for trespassing signs and be cautious near the water since this area is not maintained.
For much more extensive exploration, take a short drive to Fairmount Park on the Schuylkill River. This lovely winding river is the highlight of a park that covers several acres with forested area and grassland with well-maintained paths throughout.
