Olney is an upper Philadelphia neighborhood that values diversity and culture. Philly residents see the area as a welcoming community and it shows in the range of local businesses in the neighborhood. Most of Olney's businesses sit along North 5th Street where you'll discover many different places from Korean restaurants to Italian bakeries. While there aren't any pet stores in the neighborhood, the Broad Street Animal Hospital sits a few blocks west of the community.

Olney is a mix of residential, retail and dining, and parkland area. With so much to do, you and your pup will be able to see and discover a lot. Make sure to check the weather forecast beforehand though, especially during the summer when the pavement gets very hot. Hold your hand to the sidewalk for about five seconds and, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pup!

Olney is a large enough neighborhood that you can make your walks as long or as short as you wish. The streets are pretty flat, making it easy for older dogs to enjoy a walk outside. If you're exploring the parks, expect to climb a few hills and bring plenty of water for both you and for Fido! There are lots of parks and grassy spots that you're likely to encounter if you need to stop and rest, making for a decent balance of spots to explore.

You'll find wide streets with a lot of trees, but you'll also walk narrow sidewalks with no protection from the road. Keep your pet on a tight leash when you're walking near moving vehicles, especially if you're on a narrow pathway. Roosevelt Boulevard is one of Olney's busiest streets with many lanes of traffic, so make sure to exercise extra caution when crossing here.

This neighborhood is widely renowned for its access to many parks of different sizes. Unfortunately, there aren't any nearby dog runs, but all of the parks allow pets as long as they're on a leash. In the community's northwest corner is Fisher Park, a 23-acre greenway with a playground, picnic benches, and many walking paths through natural scenery. The park offers an escape from the busy roads where you can enjoy the foliage, especially on a sunny day. Olney and Ziehler Playgrounds are two other large, grassy areas with playgrounds.

If you want to do more hiking on your walk, head east. Olney's eastern border is Tacony Creek where you'll find a three-mile trail along the water. The trail is paved, welcomes leashed pets, and is a great place to escape and explore nature. You can walk all the way to the end of Tacony Creek Park where you'll find scenic views of the creek and surrounding foliage.
