The West Oak neighborhood has some inclines but no steep hills and it is not difficult for pedestrians to get around the community. Much of the area was developed between the 1920s and 1930s and the area near Cedarbrook was constructed post-World War II. Buildings in these regions reflect the architecture of the time. Most homes in the area are densely packed and set close to streets. Apartments buildings, duplexes, row houses, and some single-family homes make up the area's residential properties.

The district is well landscaped with large shade trees lining many residential roads creating a shady canopy ideal for on-foot travel on hot summer days. West Oak Lane is bounded by Cheltenham Avenue on the north, Stenton Avenue on the south, East Walnut Lane on the east, and Old York Road on the west.
