Wag! Walkers know Crawford-Roberts

Crawford-Roberts is a neighborhood within Pittsburgh's Hill District in the heart of the city's downtown region. This up-and-coming community is being developed and transformed as new construction projects replace vacant lots. While Crawford-Roberts is more of a residential region and well-known for appearing very suburban despite its proximity to downtown, there are several shops and restaurants scattered throughout the neighborhood. This area offers the perfect walk for those who want to get away from crowded streets but stay in the city.

Pittsburgh's climate changes with the seasons, so always check the forecast before going on your walk with your pet. The fall and spring months are ideal for afternoon walks as the temperatures are pleasant. Try to plan morning walks in the summer before temperatures rise in the afternoon, heating sidewalks and making it dangerous for puppy paws. As for the winter, it depends on any snowstorms or freezing temperatures, so check it out before you head out!

What is the terrain like in Crawford-Roberts?

As a very suburban-like neighborhood, Crawford-Roberts offers a more pleasant walk in the city away from loud cars and traffic. You'll enjoy strolling down tree-lined streets past manicured lawns, quiet single-family homes, and small apartment complexes. Some of the streets feature scenic views of the skyscrapers in Pittsburgh's downtown area. A part of the neighborhood's western border is Interstate 579 with busy entrance and exit ramps off Bedford Avenue, but it's easy to avoid that area and find another path to get where you're going.

The amount of hills depends on the street you walk down. If you want to avoid as many hills as possible, try to walk more east to west and particularly along Centre Avenue. Most of the hilly roads intersect Centre Ave. and its parallel streets. However, if it's a particularly hot day, prepare yourself with comfortable shoes and plenty of water for you and your pup!

How many greenways are there in Crawford-Roberts?

There are several small parks around the Roberts-Crawford neighborhood that you'll most likely encounter on your walk. The Granville and Crawford parklets are two small patches of grass with several trees where you can stop and rest under the shade. Parklets like these are part of a city-wide initiative to provide open spaces away from busy roadways, so you're encouraged to enjoy them! Albert 'Turk' Graham Park is a larger space featuring a playground and some benches. In the southern end of Roberts-Crawford is the Wyandotte Street Garden, a small community garden open to the public.

If you're willing to venture out of the neighborhood, the Downtown Dog Park is only a 20-minute walk west of the center of Crawford-Roberts and offers an open, fenced-in space for your pet to romp around. A little closer is the Bedford Reservoir Parklet and the Kennard Playground, two extensive parks that offer some walking paths.
