Wag! Walkers know North Point Breeze
North Point Breeze is located to the east of Pittsburgh, centrally located between the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. It is bordered by Point Breeze to the south, Homewood West to the north, and Shadyside to the west. This neighborhood was originally the location of the George Westinghouse estate, but in the 1900s, it was converted into park areas. Another wealthy estate belonging to HJ Heinz was also divided into residential lots when the mansion was destroyed but the carriage house was made into an apartment building which still stands.
North Point Breeze is primarily residential but the eastern third or so of the neighborhood is devoted to a business district including some warehouses and factories as well as smaller businesses and restaurants. The large Westinghouse Park takes up a significant portion of the neighborhood. In the large forested area south of North Point Breeze, there are two great off-leash dog parks for your dog to enjoy.
What is the terrain like in North Point Breeze?
Walking through North Point Breeze is very pleasant with large stately homes on either side. Homes have lots of attractive architectural features like multi-level roofs, front porches, and chimneys. Some large townhomes and small apartment buildings are in the area as well but are set back from the sidewalk. Most roads are divided into one-way streets by a spacious grassy middle spacer. Sidewalks are on both sides and are divided from the road by spacious dividers with lots of mature trees. Lots have a tendency to rise away from the sidewalk with little steps leading up to the walkway and lawn, so you will find it steep on the house side of the sidewalk. However, since there is plenty of room in the divider and in the middle of the road, you will feel comfortable walking your dog on a loose leash or enjoying being on wheels with your pup at your side.
How many greenways are there in North Point Breeze?
North Point Breeze is fortunate to be within walking distance of several gorgeous natural areas as well as having plenty of greenery and tree cover within the neighborhood itself. Westinghouse Park has pleasant trails through a large grassy area. This park is right within the neighborhood so you can easily walk through it on your daily outing. For more opportunities to explore, you can head south to Frick Park and its extensive forest. Within the forested area of Frick Park, there are two great off-leash dog parks for your pup to enjoy.
The Hot Dog Dam Dog Park is only semi-enclosed but offers water features, so this can be a wonderful place for your pup to play and even go for a swim. The Frick Park off-leash exercise area is a more traditional dog park with a large grassy space for your dog to play. The grass has a tendency to get muddy so be prepared for a bath afterwards!
