Wag! Walkers know Point Breeze

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a unique town. It continues to grow and become more popular, particularly with young professionals. Point Breeze, a small, largely residential, and historic neighborhood, is located in eastern Pittsburgh. Residentially, Point Breeze is predominantly composed of standalone, single-family homes. Some of the larger structures have been converted into smaller, apartment complexes. These are usually popular with local college students. Beyond homes, Point Breeze is also home to the historic Clay and Frick Mansions, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, several local churches and schools, and small restaurants and cafes.

Pittsburgh itself is one of the larger cities in the states. It is known as the Steel City, the City of Bridges, the 'Burgh, or the City of Champions. There are a variety of things to do, including seeing the professional football, hockey or baseball teams play, visiting one of the many history, science or art museums, seeing a live performance in the Cultural District, or exploring the city's popular and large public parks.

What is the terrain like in Point Breeze?

Pittsburgh is known for being a rather hilly city. The public street with the steepest incline in the country is actually just south of the downtown area! Point Breeze is no exception. While this neighborhood isn't as hilly as some of the surrounding areas, there are quite a few rolling hills throughout it. Be sure to plan your daily walking routes in advance if you are interested in avoiding any inclines!

However, like many major metropolises, Point Breeze has plenty of sidewalks for you and your pup to use. You should never have to share the roadways with vehicle traffic in this neighborhood. However, unlike many urban environments, Point Breeze has plenty of large, mature trees which can provide excellent shade during sunny, summer months.

The boundaries of Point Breeze include Penn Avenue and Fifth Avenue to the north, Peebles Street to the east, Forbes Avenue and Wilkins Avenue to the south, and South Dallas Avenue and Shady Avenue to the west.

How many greenways are there in Point Breeze?

While looking at a map, it can appear that half of the Point Breeze neighborhood is composed of parks, however, that would be misleading. One of the larger greenways in the neighborhood is actually the Homewood Cemetery and pups are usually not welcomed, even if they are leashed.

However, immediately to the east of Homewood Cemetery, you will find a small offshoot of the largest public park in Pittsburgh, Frick Park, which connects to a larger 644-acre park! This particular area of Frick Park has a small creek, plenty of walking trails, and bowling greens. While not located directly in the neighborhood, the larger area of Frick Park has some sporting facilities, an environmental center, playgrounds, and a dog park! The off-leash area is located centrally and provides water fountains and bowls for your pups to hydrate and enjoy.

Smaller greenways in Point Breeze include Sterrett Park, Conover Park Corner, Lyndhurst Green, and Mellon Park Rose Garden.
