Cat collars are a pet parent staple, and they serve many purposes. They make our furbabies easy to identify if they get out, and can house an airtag, tracking device, or bell to help us locate our pets. Plus, they allow a bit of self-expression and allow our pet's personality to shine on the outside!

Cat collars can also be dangerous and pose strangulation risks if they are improperly made or used, so choosing one (and using it correctly) is important! That's why we went digging to find the best cat collars on the market that are equal parts safe, functional, and cute!

Let's check them out!

Overview

GoTags Nylon Personalized Breakaway Cat Collar with Bell

First up on this list is my favorite collar and the one I bought for my own cats — the GoTags Nylon Personalized Breakaway Cat Collar.

What I loved about this collar is that they offer free embroidery, which you can use to write your pet's name and/or your phone number.

My cat Binx hated wearing his ID tag and would do whatever he could to remove his old collar. But I wanted him to be easy to identify if he ever sneaks outside. I bought this collar as a solution, thinking that if the collar was lighter weight and didn't have all the dangly tags, he might prefer wearing it— and I was right! This is the only collar he will leave on for any extended period of time.

GoTags even offer coordinating dog collars so your whole pack can match! And the collars allow for up to 21 characters, making them paw-fect for even the longest names.

Collar colors:

  • Blue
  • Black

GoTags Personalized Breakaway Cat Collar

Why Wag! loves GoTags

  • Personalizable with embroidery, which is much more durable than vinyl lettering
  • Also comes in a reflective version
  • Breakaway feature to prevent pets from getting snagged or stuck
  • Attached bell to help locate your kitty

Considerations & concerns

  • Too small for young kittens

What pet parents say about GoTags

"The collar looks great. It's a little bit big for my Archie. He's such a tiny kitten. I'm sure he will grow into it. Everything I get from chewy is wonderful. They have fast, free shipping and everything you could need for your pets."

"My friend is a cofounder of a cat rescue and she said Lexi tries to get out so I should get this. I haven't experienced it but my house has a lot of large windows all around. Nevertheless Lexi doesn't mind this super cute collar and I feel better just in case she does get out. she is chipped but this insures she gets home sooner."

Pawtitas Glow In The Dark Breakaway Cat Collar

Paw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw icon

If you have an indoor/outdoor cat, the Pawitias Glow in the Dark collar is a great choice.

It is made of extra-durable ripstop to ensure it stands up to all your kitty's adventures. It also comes in several colors, all of which expand from 8 to 12 inches in circumference, making them purr-fect for adolescents and adult cats.

The collar both glows in the dark and has reflective threading to increase visibility. Some pet parents complain about the collar not glowing properly, however, like most UV-reactive glow in the dark materials, you'll need to "charge" the collar in the sunlight for it to glow properly.

  • Comes in 8 stylish colors to match all your cat's ensembles
  • The breakaway buckle can prevent your kitty from being trapped if their collar gets hung

Considerations & concerns

  • Some pet parents have received defective collars that do not glow even with proper "charging" in direct sunlight

What pet parents say about Pawtitas

"I purchased 4 of these collars in different colors for the 4 out door cats we inherited when we purchased our house four months ago. We were looking for reflective, well made, breakaway collars that were affordable. These definitely fit the bill , we couldn't be happier. They are well made, adjustable and absolutely adorable!"

"This is the best cat collar I have ever purchased. My cat has no problems with it at all, it does not shred up and look used. You can not go wrong with this collar. I highly recommend it."

Pettsie Cotton Breakaway Cat Collar with Friendship Bracelet

Paw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw icon

There is something so whimsical and nostalgic about friendship bracelets, and this cat collar and friendship bracelet combo from Pettsie is the perfect way to commemorate your bond with your furry BFF.

Besides being adorable, this cat collar is functional and has safety features to keep your kitty safe AND cute. It features a breakaway buckle, expandable sizing so it can grow with your kitty, and a D ring to attach their ID tag or an air tag.

If you or your cat has allergies, this is also a great choice since it is made from cotton, which is one of the safest fabrics for sensitive skin.

Why Wag! loves Pettsie

  • Comes with an adorable friendship bracelet so you can match with your furry pal
  • Made of cotton, which is great for pets with nylon allergies
  • D ring, which can allow you to attach ID tags or air tags
  • Expandable so it can grow with your catto
  • Adjusts from sizes 7.5 inches to 11.5 inches

Considerations & concerns

  • No bell to help locate your kitty
  • Since it is cotton, it can fray with heavy wear

What pet parents say about Pettsie

"Bought this to replace an old collar that was very worn, and I am very pleased with the fit and construction. My cat seems very comfortable wearing it, and I can adjust the length relatively easily. The cost was reasonable, and I was tickled by the fact that it came with a cute matching friendship bracelet — I enjoy the idea that I can wear that while away from my little buddy!"

"The design on this collar is really pretty and I love the warm colors. My one critique is that it could be more adjustable. I have a Tortie that's on the petite side and I have the collar adjusted to the tightest setting and it's still a tad bit looser on her than I think it should be. But she seems to like it, and I really think it suits her!"

The best part is these collars come in 3 colors and have a stunning unisex design.

Colors:

Necoichi Kimono Breakaway Cat Collar

Why Wag! loves Necoichi

  • Fashionable style with a unisex bow
  • Comes in many different fun colors and patterns
  • Features an attached bell for location purposes
  • Has a ring for ID and rabies tags

Considerations & concerns

  • Some pet parents state it comes off too easily

What pet parents say about Necoichi

"Weasel wore hers a week or two and then I saw [her] in the closet trying to get it off. My last cat Boo wouldn't wear one either. I am wearing one on my wrist and I gave another to a neighbor for her cat. And I have one left. I also bought the dental chews and she loves them and gets them as treats though that won't continue because they are too much for mom."

"This is my second time purchasing this collar. We first purchased this collar in 2020. Compared to the other collars we got, this one has been most easier to put on and and take it off. The quality it amazing because Zuzuu wears this collar everyday and its still in excellent condition without any fading of color or thinning/tear in fabric. The only reason why I'm repurchasing is is because the bow fell off recently and I miss how adorable my cat looked with it. Pros: * easier to put on and take it off * turns your cat into a paw-fessional cutie * amazing quality Cons: * the bow came off (though it took 3 years for that to happen)"

Beastie Bands

Paw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw iconPaw icon

Beastie bands are one of the most unique cat collars on our list. These are made of soft and stretchy neoprene and have velcro closures to secure the collar.

While these don't have a breakaway feature, they are designed to stretch in the event your cat gets tangled up in something. These are super lightweight and are able to fit a wide range of sizes. Plus, they come in SO many different designs (we just linked the heart design, but there are fish, bones, paw prints, and so many more designs and colors available on Amazon!)

Colors:

  • Purple
  • Red
  • Black
  • Pink
Beastie Bands

Beastie Bands

Why Wag! loves Beastie Bands

  • Uses a comfy neoprene material
  • Comes in a variety of colors and designs
  • Velcro closure that makes it easy to put on squirmy kitties
  • Great for cats with larger necks

Considerations & concerns

  • Doesn't feature a breakaway clip but is designed to stretch if the cat gets tangled in something
  • Doesn't included a bell or O ring to attach tags
  • Not available through Chewy or Petco

What pet parents say about Beastie Bands

"I think it's more comfortable than most collars, and my cats don't mind at all when I put these on. The Velcro allows some flexibility in the fit and my cats are large, but these fit them well. These will probably fit all but the largest housecats.

Quick release, while many people swear by it, is a trade-off because cats can lose their collars. A cat without a collar looks like a stray, so it depends on what you want. I want a collar that stays on and [this one] is flexible enough that I don't worry about the cat getting caught. Once, one of my cats shook this off, but I might not have put it on very well.

The assortment of colors is nice, too. This is my go-to collar."
