If there’s one thing dogs are absolute masters at, it’s sleeping. Deep nightly sleeps, daytime dozing and occasional napping — dogs can spend as much as half of every day snoozing. It’s thought that puppies need 18-20 hours of sleep a day, as they need to recharge their excitable energy regularly, while senior dogs who might tire easily may need around the same amount. Even adult dogs in their prime can sleep for up to 14 hours a day. Dogs are smart; they sleep when their bodies tell them to.
Dogs can pretty much sleep anywhere — it’s one of their superpowers. They’ll curl up on a sofa, in a sunny spot in the backyard, in a quiet corner somewhere, and of course, on your bed (if they can get away with it). But — if you want to give your dog the best possible night’s sleep, and provide as much comfort as you can, it’s well worth investing in a good quality dog bed.
Now, there’s a huge choice of dog beds available, from budget price range to over-the-top luxury options. Worry not, for here at Wag! we’ve compiled a selection of some of the best dog beds around. Let’s get started.
Overview
Frisco Plush Orthopedic Dog Bed
A dog living with arthritis or general joint pain — or even just in his or her senior years — could benefit from sleeping in an orthopedic dog bed. An orthopedic bed provides additional support, helping to protect aching joints, and is usually firmer to sleep on.
We think this, from Frisco, is worthy of a place on any best orthopedic dog bed shortlist. With a wraparound bolster, three-inch foam slab and a one-inch memory foam mattress built in, the Frisco Plush Orthopedic Front Bolster dog bed provides a lot of comfort. A key feature is the ‘entry dip’ — a lower section to the front of the bed makes it easier for your dog to get in and out of the bed; no need to climb in and put extra strain on already sore joints.
The cover is removable, so simple to wash, and it’s available in two color choices — beige and gray. There’s no small size, but it does come in medium, large and extra large; the latter is 40 inches in length, 30 inches wide and nine inches high.
Frisco Plush Orthopedic Dog Bed
Why Wag! loves it!
- Provides high levels of comfort
- Has extra support with the front bolster
- The cover is removable and machine washable
Considerations & concerns
- This bed isn’t rated as chew resistant
- It’s expensive — the extra large size retails at around $150, at the time of writing, with the medium priced at just over $80
What Pet Parents Say About Frisco Plush Orthopedic dog bed
“I bought this bed YEARS ago and have tried to find cheaper alternatives to replace it ever since. Unfortunately, all the alternatives have missed the mark - they are either too firm or they've lost their support fast. My sore old American Bulldog (95 lbs) has been back in this bed non-stop since we got it - ignoring the other two most recent beds we've gotten for
him. If you're looking for a quality orthopedic bed, this is the one.”
“I like that this bed is very supportive on the bottom and especially the sides. The sides don’t squish down like some beds, so my little one can rest her head on it and still be supported.”

Furhaven Perfect Comfort Velvet Waves Dog Bed
If your dog loves a sofa snooze, why not give him or her a sofa of their own? The Furhaven Perfect Comfort Velvet Waves dog bed is designed in the style of a sofa, with three sides — perfect for your pup to rest their weary head on.
It’s a stylish dog bed that won’t look out of place in any home. It’s comfortable, too; the base is made with a supportive orthopedic foam so it’s a good choice for dogs who might be living with joint pain. It comes in a choice of three different colors — Brownstone, Granite Gray and Celadon Green — and a range of sizes. There’s small (20 inches long, 15 inches wide and three inches high), right up to Jumbo Plus, which is 53 inches in length and marketed as suitable for dogs weighing up to 125 lbs. This makes it one of the best dog beds for large dogs we’ve found.
Furhaven Perfect Comfort Dog Bed
Why Wag! loves it!
- Available in five different sizes
- Choice of colors
- Sofa-like design
- Orthopedic qualities so good for dogs with arthritis
Considerations & concerns
- Some reviews have noted the sizing isn’t accurate
- Not suitable for dogs with chewing issues
What Pet Parents Say About Furhaven Perfect Comfort Velvet Waves dog bed
“I was worried my dog would have trouble transitioning to a new bed but he slept on it the very first night. He loves it! I think he really likes the bolstered edges for his head. It’s a great bed and so (reasonably) priced.”
“Bought this for my old lady - Lali just turned 14, becoming arthritic, and needed something a bit firmer. I bought the medium, which fits her just right at 34 pounds. She still sometimes goes to her older bed, but has turned to this one most frequently. 2 thumbs up!”

Canine Creations Orthopedic Pillow Topper Dog Bed
Regardless of design and type, a dog bed has to be comfortable — your dog has to love sleeping in it. This Canine Creations Orthopedic Pillow Topper Dog Bed is certainly that — it looks so plush and inviting that we’d be happy snuggling down on it ourselves.
This is essentially two large layers positioned together. The bottom insert is a four-inch thick orthopedic foam, with the top pillow filled with warm polyester fiber. The base means that your pup is elevated from the floor (if you’re looking for the best elevated dog bed, this is an option), so they won’t be sleeping on the ground. They’ll be nicely cushioned, and it’s very supportive — even for bigger dogs.
In fact, as it’s available in only two sizes — large and extra large — it’s one of the best dog beds for large dogs. The large size is 40 inches in length, 30 inches wide and 10 inches high. Opt for extra large, and that increases to 45 inches in length, 36 inches wide and, again, 10 inches high. There’s a choice of three colors — mushroom, charcoal and blue.
Canine Creations Pillow Topper Dog Bed
Why Wag! loves it!
- The cover is washable
- Designed for bigger dogs
- Orthopedic foam can help to relieve pressure on joints
Considerations & concerns
- It’s not cheap — the extra large size retails at around $90
- Some reviewers have commented that the bed sags in places
What Pet Parents Say About Canine Creations Orthopedic Pillow Topper dog bed
“I bought this bed as a Christmas gift for my old pup and he literally will not sleep on anything else. He has other beds throughout the house that he now walks past to go sleep on this baby in our bedroom. My wife and I used to call him shadow (which is not his name) because he would follow us everywhere we go. But since he got this bed, nope...good luck getting him to just get up and go out to use the bathroom.”
“Our senior boy "Sunny" gets a new orthopedic bed every year, but this time around we were sad to see his favorite bed wasn't being made anymore. After a bit of research we found this bed and it sounded pretty good so we gave it a go and I'm glad we did! Sunny absolutely loves curling up with his blankies for naps and at night-time on his new bed! The bottom cushion is supportive and doesn't dip in the middle and the top pillow is super soft, plush and cushy. Sunny weighs 77 pounds and has plenty of room to stretch out if the mood strikes him, but he typically curls into a ball, so this bed gives him more than enough space to cuddle in. Chewy offered this bed at a great price...it arrived in secure packaging within three days. Highly recommended!”

Petfusion Ultimate Lounge Memory Foam Dog Bed
For many pet parents, buying a new dog bed can come with an extra challenge. Sure, it needs to be comfortable, supportive, in the right price range — but it also needs to be chew resistant. If your dog has a chewing habit, you’ll no doubt be keen to source the best dog bed for chewers.
These aren’t always easy to find; some dog beds claim to be chew resistant, only for canine gnashers to tear holes in it fairly easily. However, from reviews we’ve seen, PetFusion’s Ultimate Lounge Memory Foam Bolster dog bed seems to be a reliable and highly-rated product.
There’s a lot to like here. It’s made with an anti-tear outer covering, which is also water-resistant. Of course, it’s comfy too, with a memory foam base and polyfill boosters to deliver extra support for sleepy pups. Choose from three sizes — large, extra large and jumbo; the latter is 50 inches long, and 40 inches wide, making it among the best dog beds for large dogs.
Petfusion Ultimate Lounge Memory Foam Dog Bed
Why Wag! loves it!
- Thick memory foam base and supportive boosters for extra comfort
- Made with durable material to prevent damage from chewing
- Washable cover
Considerations & concerns
- It’s one of the more expensive dog beds available — the jumbo size retails at over $230
- Some customers still reported tears, so it’s not 100% chew resistant
What Pet Parents Say About PetFusion Ultimate Lounge Memory Foam Bolster
“I was having issues with a puppy chewing up my older dog's ortho beds. This bed solved my problem. He has not put a dent in this one! The fabric is durable and easy to clean. The foam is very thick and sturdy. It truly is the ultimate dog bed!”
“Cricket is a digger. Even though we try to limit that with her beds, she (has) destroyed 5 in the last year (including 1 that did not survive puppy chewing)! It (has) been really hard to find a bed with bolsters, which she loves, that has a durable cushion covering. I think this one will last! We did put a throw over it because the cushion is not the softest fabric and she has settled right in. What little digging she is done to the cushion itself is not showing damage yet. Fingers crossed it continues! It was more expensive than I would have hoped, but cheaper in the long run if it lasts.”

Brindle Waterproof Orhtopedic Pillow Dog Bed
Some dog beds can look extravagant; if you prefer a simpler design without sacrificing any comfort, try this Brindle Waterproof Orthopedic Pillow dog bed. It looks, as the name hints, like a large flat pillow or cushion. It’s certainly easy for your dog to get onto; there’s no clambering or climbing up when it’s snooze time.
This dog bed is four inches high, so your pup won’t be lying on the floor, and the pillow has two internal layers. The bottom layer has two inches of high-density support form, while the top layer provides another two inches of memory foam. Because this memory foam can adapt to your dog’s sleeping position, it can help to alleviate pressure points so it’s one of the best orthopedic dog bed styles we’ve found.
It’s available in three sizes — small, medium and large. Small is 22 inches in length and 16 inches wide; medium is 34 inches in length and 22 inches wide, and large is 46 inches in length and 28 inches wide. As a breed guide, small is recommended for dogs weighing up to 35 lbs, medium for dogs weighing between 35-65 lbs, and large for dogs heavier than 65 lbs. There are three color choices — Charcoal Velour, Navy Trellis and Red Sherpa.
Brindle Waterproof Orthopedic Dog Bed
Why Wag! loves it!
- Non-skid bottom so the bed won’t slide around
- The waterproof layer can protect against any accidents
- Simple design and easy to move from room to room
Considerations & concerns
- Some reviewers have noted that the bed is not completely waterproof
- Some reviewers report that the foam isn’t as thick as expected
What Pet Parents Say About Brindle Waterproof Orthopedic Pillow dog bed
“I got this for the Yorkie Abby I inherited; she is 10 yrs old and she loves it. It helps her sleep so comfortably that she sleeps ALL night now. I love that it has a protected leak guard lining under the zip cover bedding that comes off and you can wash easily. Highly recommend and will buy again.”
“This is the second one I’ve bought! The first lasted 4-5 years and really it was only the cover that started to tear (because my dog likes to scratch it like crazy to make it ‘comfy’. I
wish I could have ordered just a replacement cover, because the mattress part is fine. I don’t mind though- great value for money-very durable. Easy to remove (the) cover and wash and dogs love it!”

K&H Cooling Pet Cot
When we think of the best dog bed, what we typically have in mind is something that’s going to keep our pup warm and toasty. But, don’t forget that at certain times of the year — and also where you live — temperatures are going to be high, so your dog may need to cool down. In the height of summer, you’re more likely to be shopping around for the best cooling dog bed instead of something big and fluffy.
The K&H Cooling Pet Cot is perfect for sleeping inside or outside in warmer weather. The design is like that of a classic camp bed, with four sturdy legs and raised off the ground. It’s strong — capable of holding dogs weighing up to 200 lbs — and is easy to clean. Built into this bed is a non-removable ‘coolin’ pad that can be filled with tap water to maintain an ideal temperature.
It’s available in two sizes — medium (32 inches long, 25 inches wide) and large (42 inches long, 30 inches wide). K&H also provides accessories, at extra cost, if you want to style up this dog bed, including a cot cover and canopy.
K&H Cooling Pet Cot
Why Wag! loves it!
- Easy to fold and storage, making it a great travel accessory
- Sturdy, steel frame
- Quick and easy to assemble
Considerations & concerns
- No frills look — quite a basic design
- Some reviewers have said the cooling pad could be colder
What Pet Parents Say About K&H Cooling Pet Cot
“Super easy to put together and my dog is happy to jump on and stay on. It's new to us so I've not tried cleaning it, but the material looks to be really to wipe clean, or take off for a deeper cleaning.”
“This is such an interesting product. (It’s) a cooling mat that is built into a cot. So the cooling mat is also not really a mat- you can fill it with cold water so your pup can lay on it and cool herself off. Such a great idea! But you (don’t) have to fill it with water. The cot was super easy to put together. Right now because (it’s) winter, we threw her blanket and pillow on the cot and she hopped right up and made herself comfy!”
“Really sturdy high quality elevated cot. Will be really great in the summer as water can be added to provide cooling for your pet. My german shepherd already really loves it! Nice to have a comfortable place for your dog to rest while outside (that’s) not on the ground. Super simple to put together and take apart. No tools required and stores (away) compact and tidy.”
