Overview
When it comes to choosing a great cat food, Annamaet cat food is a top contender for pet owners who are looking for nutritious, quality recipes. This brand is known for its commitment to high-quality ingredients. However, no pet food brand is perfect, and Annamaet is no different.
In this review, we will explore the brand's offerings, ingredients, nutritional value, and what makes Annamaet stand out among other pet food companies. We will also touch on some concerns about the brand (like its limited product variety), which we hope will expand in the near future!
Annamaet product ranges and flavors
Annamaet's cat offerings are limited to 3 holistic dry food recipes, and unfortunately, there are no wet food or treat options. These dry foods include:
Annamaet Cat Food
Original Feline
Annamaet's original feline recipe is a grain-inclusive recipe that is flavored with chicken and brown rice and claims to support skin and coat health. The main ingredient in this recipe is chicken meal, which is followed by brown rice, chicken fat, oats, and a range of other grains and fish meals. We would much prefer to see a whole animal protein source like chicken breast or salmon rather than a meat meal as the leading ingredient — however, meat meals are still a good source of protein.
We do appreciate that they add a variety of chelated minerals and probiotics to help with gut health and increase the absorption of nutrients. This recipe contains 33% protein, 15% fat, and 400 calories per serving, making it the brand's lowest in calories, protein, and fat of all their cat food offerings.
Feline Sustain No. 29
Their Feline Sustain No. 29 is, in our opinion, the shining star of their recipes. This recipe centers around sustainable wild-caught cod, which they source from line fishermen. Line fishing is a more ethical fishing practice that helps prevent the harm of unintended species like dolphins and sea turtles.
The first three ingredients in this recipe are cod (we love a named protein source as the first ingredient!), turkey meal, and white fish meal. We would prefer to see turkey listed in the recipe name or at least on the front of the bag since poultry allergies are quite common.
According to the guaranteed analysis, this recipe boasts 37% protein by weight and 16% fat, making it a great energy source for active cattos. It is on the higher side as far as calories go, with 458 calories per serving, so this is something to be mindful of if your kitty struggles with their weight.
Grain Free Feline
Annamaet's final offering is their signature grain-free food. This recipe contains a whopping 44% protein and 20% fat. The recipe sources its protein from a blend of animal and plant sources, including chicken meal, white fish meal, chicken fat, and field peas. This high protein and fat ratio makes this recipe lean higher in calories, clocking in at 472 calories per cup, so be mindful of portion sizes when serving this to your kitty.
Why Wag! likes Annamaet
Human-grade protein sources
You can rest easy knowing that all the meat and seafood used in Annamaet recipes is human-grade and undergoes strict quality control inspections to ensure it is suitable for their furry customers.
Can be fed through all life stages
All three Annamaet recipes are formulated to comply with the American Animal Feed Control Officials standards for all life stages, meaning if you have a kitten, you will never have to switch them to a different food unless a dietary or health concern arises (like allergies or obesity) This is great because switching pet food brands can be very hard on a cat's stomach, and finding new foods that your pet enjoys and tolerates, can be quite a challenge!
Grain-free and whole-grain options
We like that Annamet has both grain-inclusive and grain-free options! Their grain-free recipe is a great option for kitties who are sensitive to grains, and grain-inclusive formulas offer cats extra fiber to keep their digestive tract moving as it should.
Thoughtful packaging
One of our favorite features of these products is the resealable packaging, which has a velcro-type seal to keep food fresh and bacteria out! Plus, their packaging is eco-friendly and sustainably produced.
Formulated by experts
Annamaet recipes are formulated by a team of animal nutritionists and veterinary experts, including veterinary nutritionist Dr. Joe Wakshlag, a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. These recipes are carefully crafted to ensure they align with AAFCO standards for felines of all life stages.
Concerns & considerations
It may be not easy to locate in stores
Annamaet can be difficult to find in stores and is only available through select online retailers, which can be inconvenient for some pet parents.
Higher price point compared to similar brands
Annamaet seems to have a higher price point than similar quality cat food recipes. As of writing, their recipes range between $3.70 to $7.25/lb depending on the recipe and the bag size, with the larger bags being significantly cheaper per pound.
Few options
The selection of cat products is extremely small, with only 3 options: their original recipe, a grain-free recipe, and a fish recipe. While their recipes are suitable for all life stages, we prefer to see options specifically made for kittens and seniors, as well as some sensitive stomach and weight management formulas. We would also like to see a limited ingredient or hydrolyzed protein option for cats with food sensitivities.
What pet parents say about Annamaet
"My cat is super picky. She will starve rather than eat food she does not like. ( same as me). She likes this food. It does not upset her stomach. The bag has a unique 1/2" velcro/zipper-like closure that makes it easy to seal. No more stale food."
"I chose this food after studying cat foods for a while. This food is quite low in carbs(16%), high in protein and moderate fat. The phosphorus is around 1% and ash is okay. I highly recommend this cat food!!"

Annamaet history
Annamaet has been part of the pet nutrition industry for over 35 years, selling its first bag back in 1968. The brand was started by founder and president Rob Downey and his spouse, Mary Jo. Before founding Annamaet, Downey worked as a field researcher for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where he researched ways to optimize canine athlete nutrition.
Over the years, Annamaet has remained a family-owned and operated business that is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, and sources and produces all its pet products in the US. The brand's name is a play on Rob's mother's name, "Anna Mae," and is pronounced like "annimate."
Annamaet recalls
As of writing, Annamaet has never experienced a recall of any of their pet food products, that goes for their cat and dog food products. We will update this article should a recall arise.
