Overview

Finding a cat food that's good for your feline - and they genuinely enjoy - is a mean feat. The search for the perfect balance between nutrition and flavor has become complicated in a market saturated with foods containing fillers and artificial additives. Bixbi Liberty cat food claims to be free of these cheap additives, using all-natural ingredients and quality meats instead.

But is Bixbi Liberty cat food worth the price tag? We've gone down the rabbit hole, scrutinizing Bixbi Liberty's recipes, uncovering its brand history, and referencing genuine customer reviews. Keep scrolling for Wag!'s unbiased Bixbi Liberty cat food review!

Bixbi Liberty cat food product ranges and flavors

Let's dive into the meat of the matter — Bixbi Liberty's protein-centric cat food products.

Bixbi Liberty has a small range with much less variety than big brands like Purina and Blue Buffalo. With just four dry recipes and eight wet foods, it's clear Bixbi Liberty's focus is on quality over quantity.

Bixbi Liberty Dry Cat Food

Bixbi Liberty dry cat food

Bixbi's grain-free dry recipes come in 3 lb and 10 lb bags and are all formulated for all life stages.

Chicken

The first thing we noticed about this recipe is that real chicken is the leading ingredient — precisely what we want to see! Real meat is always the optimal first ingredient, and this is one of the first things we check for when analyzing a recipe.

Next up on the ingredients list are lentils and peas, popular ingredient choices for grain-free pet foods since they are fiber-rich and packed with plant-based protein. We also see dried yeast, which offers an additional source of amino acids and vitamin B, as well as chicken fat, which not only adds flavor, but also glucosamine and chrondrotin.

We like that this recipe, along with the other dry recipes, contain vitamin E instead of artificial preservatives. This food is fairly high protein, at 41% protein, as factored on a dry matter basis. At 16.5% fat and 431 calories per cup, this recipe is fairly calorific, and may not be best for weight-watching felines.

Chicken & Salmon

If you're looking for a higher protein, lower fat option for your tiny tiger, the Bixbi Liberty Chicken & Salmon might be the move at 42% protein, 13.6% fat, and 420 calories per cup. The first five ingredients in this recipe are very similar to the chicken recipe and include cage-free chicken, yellow peas, red lentils, salmonegg, and natural chicken flavor.

All of Bixbi Liberty's dry cat foods, including this one, feature yucca schidigera extract, which is a natural source of saponins, an antioxidant-rich compound that can improve digestive health and reduce fecal odor (no one likes a smelly litterbox!) One ingredient that is unique to this recipe, however, is dried kelp, which can added to pet foods for extra antioxidants, iodine, vitamins, and minerals.

Digestive Health Chicken

Tummy troubles are a common cat problem. Luckily, Bixbi has a chicken recipe specially made for kitties with digestive issues. The Digestive Health Chicken recipe is similar to the chicken recipe ingredients-wise, with one major difference — ground miscanthus grass.

Miscanthus grass is added to help with digestion since it's fiber-rich and can help with irregular bowel movements. This recipe is slightly lower in protein than the other recipes, at 37.5% protein, which is still quite high compared to lower-quality cat foods. Calorie and fat-wise, it's on par with the other recipes, with a cup of kibble averaging 431 calories.

Salmon

Finally, we have the Bixbi Libery Salmon dry food, which features salmon, peas, lentils, egg, and natural vegetable flavor as the first five ingredients. The other ingredients are similar to the other recipes, including a premix of vitamins and chelated minerals, as well as dandelion and alfalfa meal, which are excellent sources of vitamins and fiber.

Bixbi Liberty Paté Cat Food Variety Pack

Bixbi Liberty Paté wet cat food

Bixbi Liberty Patés are a great way to keep your kitty hydrated (since cats are known for not being the best drinkers). Patés can also appeal to picky kitties who aren't wild about kibble. This line comes in four flavors: beef, tuna, chicken, and chicken with sweet potato

We love that Bixbi Liberty uses sustainably produced proteins like free-range chicken and grass-fed beef for these products and does not include fillers or grains. These recipes follow a similar ingredient pattern, mainly comprised of various proteins, water for processing, meat broth, and egg products.

One issue with Bixbi Liberty Beef Paté is that tuna and chicken are among the first four ingredients. However, there is no mention of these ingredients on the front label. Likewise, the Bixbi Liberty Tuna Paté has multiple chicken products on the ingredients list. However, this isn't disclosed on the front label or in the recipe name. This labeling could be misleading and cause issues for cats with meat allergies

Other than that, these are excellent quality cat foods. Each recipe consists of 32% to 42% protein on a dry matter basis, with Bixbi Liberty Tuna Paté being the highest in protein. These recipes range between 75 and 109 calories per 2.75 oz can. Bixbi's Patés are also available in the Savory Paté Variety Pack.

Bixbi Liberty Shredded in Broth Variety Pack

Bixbi Liberty Shredded in Broth wet cat food

Last but not least, we have Bixbi Liberty's Shredded in Broth cat foods. These grain- and filler-free options come in four flavors, like Shredded Chicken & Pumpkin and Shredded Chicken & Salmon. At 82% moisture, the shredded recipes have higher water content than Bixbi Liberty Patés, which average a maximum of 74% moisture.

Ingredients-wise, these recipes aren't that different from the Paté range but boast slightly more meat and higher protein content, ranging between 50% and 62% protein as dry matter. With a calorie count ranging between 56 and 70 calories per can, your kitty can enjoy Bixbi Liberty's shredded recipes without any guilt.

Why Wag! likes Bixbi Liberty cat food

Bixbi Liberty might be a relatively new cat food range, but the effort this brand puts into its foods has us taking notice. Here are a few reasons we feel Bixbi Liberty is a quality choice.

Award-winning recipes

Bixbi takes pride in the quality of the pet food products it produces, and the industry is recognizing the efforts! Bixbi recipes have received numerous awards, from the "Susan Thixton's foods I would trust to feed my own pets" award to being a finalist for the 2021 Pet Product News Editor's Choice Award. The Whole Dog Journal has even featured Bixbi products!

Independently tested

Bixbi takes the quality and safety of pet food products seriously. Here's what the brand has to say about the safety protocols Bixbi has in place, "We test each and every batch of our food and treats for Salmonella, E-coli, and Listeria. And our products undergo rigorous testing for contaminants and environmental toxins such as BPA, lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium, pesticides, antibiotics, and melamine."

Likewise, every batch of pet food Bixbi produces is tested to ensure the guaranteed analysis is accurate and mineral levels are safe. Plus, Bixbi pet foods are third-party tested for purity and digestibility to prevent mycotoxins, lead, and other contaminants from entering the pet food chain.

USDA and FDA-approved kitchens

The attention to detail when it comes to safety does not stop with just testing the foods. The manufacturer of this brand, Barrett Petfood, operates state-of-the-art USDA and FDA-approved industrial kitchens where these recipes are prepared. But don't just take word for it! They submit their facilities to regular third-party auditing to ensure the kitchens comply with Global Food Safety Initiative protocol.

Veterinary-formulated

Besides stringent manufacturing protocols, the brand has a team of experts who formulate nutritious, high-quality recipes. According to the Bixbi website, "BIXBI employs a PhD in Companion Animal Nutrition, a Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), in addition to other industry experts with decades of canine and feline nutrition experience."

Concerns & considerations

Bixbi Liberty is a solid cat food range with high safety standards, but there are some factors you should consider before running out to grab a bag.

Affordability

For such a high-quality brand, Bixbi is surprisingly affordable — however $5 per lb is still quite pricey. For a 10-lb bag of Bixbi Liberty, you can expect to spend between $45 and $50.

Wet cat foods are made in Thailand

Bixbi Liberty's dry cat foods are made right here in the US. However, its wet foods are outsourced to Thailand. Many major brands, including Weruva, Tiki Cat, and Earthborn Holistic, manufacture wet cat food in Thailand since the region is the largest exporter of tuna, and production costs are much lower than in the US.

While these facilities are subject to audits from governing bodies, like the Department of Livestock Development (the Taiwanese equivalent to the USDA), we feel that the safety regulations for wet food production may not be as stringent as those implemented for Bixbi's dry food.

No value-size bags

The largest bag size that Bixbi Liberty offers for dry food recipes is 10 lbs. While 10 lbs is pretty standard, we would like to see larger bags for pet parents with multi-cat households or those who prefer to buy in bulk for a better value.

What pet parents say about Bixbi Liberty cat food

"With most other dry cat food, my cat has severe allergic reactions. His mouth gets red and sore; he develops hot spots on his skin and starts pulling out his hair in those areas. He has no allergic reaction to this dry food. Also his coat is really shiny now. [This is] very high quality food."

"For years I've studied the ingredients in the food I buy for my pets. The science regarding pet nutrition has changed over the years so it pays to be vigilant. This food provides quality ingredients for a fair price. That's all I can ask for in today's market place. I feed Liberty to my cats and puppy."

Bixbi Liberty cat food history

Bixibi didn't start as a pet food company but as a brand of organic mushroom supplements. The company was established in 2009 and was the brainchild of the Couch Brothers. The brothers appreciated the health benefits of mushrooms from a young age since they grew up on a mushroom farm and had seen the benefits firsthand.

The name Bixbi pays homage to James and Micheal Crouch's favorite childhood surf spot, a beach near the Bixby Ranch in Santa Barbara. The company headquarters is in Boulder, CO, and everything from ingredient sourcing to manufacturing the finished product (except for Bixbi's wet food products) happens here in the US.

Barrett Petfood, a leading manufacturer of independent pet food brands, handles the manufacturing of Bixbi dry recipes. Barrett Petfood started as a six-person, family operation and has become a large-scale pet food provider for major brands, like Bixbi, in the heart of Minnesota. Most ingredients for Bixbi's ingredients are grown right on the Barrett farm, and recently, they became a zero-waste company. All the waste from manufacturing gets recycled into bedding, animal feed, or fertilizer for the fields.
