Overview

Tiki Cat touts itself as “the carnivore diet cats were born to eat.” Inspired by the natural prey diet of felines, Tiki Cat offers a wide selection of meat-forward, high-protein foods, meal toppers, and treats.

It focuses on wet recipes, which provide up to 95% protein and high moisture levels, but also has a small kibble range. All Tiki Cat products use non-GMO, identifiable ingredients and are designed to meet the nutritional needs of cats across different life stages.

Tiki Cat’s use of top-shelf ingredients has pet parents and their felines purring. But is Tiki Cat right for your kitty? Read on for Wag!’s full Tiki Cat cat food review to dig a little deeper into this brand's product ranges, benefits, recalls, and more.

Tiki Cat product ranges and flavors

Tiki Cat offers an impressive range of flavors and textures with 40+ wet foods, kibbles, treats, and meal toppers to please even the fussiest eaters. Let’s check them out!

Tiki Cat After Dark, Baby Born Carnivore, and Aloha Friends

After Dark

After Dark is high-protein wet food available in four consistencies to please your picky purring pal. Each recipe is premium — they each list real cuts of meat, organ meat, and broth in the top five ingredients. Tiki Cat adds dried egg product to some of its After Dark foods, which is high in B-vitamins, vitamin A, and protein.

There are ten recipes to pick from, all of which contain chicken, which is a problem if your tiny tiger has a chicken allergy or sensitivity.

After Dark lives up to the billing as a high-protein cat food range — the Chicken, Chicken Liver & Quail Pâté recipe contains high protein (45.4% as dry matter) and above-average fat (29.5% as dry matter) compared to your average wet cat food.

Aloha Friends

Aloha Friends is perfect for sensitive stomachs. Each recipe is packed with pumpkin, which is high in soluble and insoluble fiber to promote healthy bowel movements. All ten recipes in this wet food line contain real tuna or chicken as the first ingredient, followed by broth, pumpkin, and other cuts of meat. Aside from supplements, each recipe contains limited ingredients — ideal for cats with food allergies.

Aloha Friends aren't just great for your feline's stomach; they're also loaded with protein. For example, the Tuna & Pumpkin recipe consists of high protein (68.7% as dry matter) and average fat (11.2% as dry matter).

Baby

Baby is Tiki Cat’s line for kittens, with products for the different stages of kittenhood. Tiki Cat Baby recipes are high in DHA for brain health, taurine for heart health, and prebiotics for digestive health.

There’s no reason for your fur-baby to be fussy about these recipes — each Tiki Cat Baby food lists quality cuts of meat and tasty broth in the top ingredients. They also include dried eggs for a protein boost and sunflower oil, a source of omega-6 fatty acids.

Plus, they’re rich in protein and fat to support growth and development. The Chicken & Liver Baby Pâté recipe contains high protein (63.6% as dry matter) and above-average fat (22.7% as dry matter) compared to typical wet kitten foods.

Born Carnivore

Born Carnivore is Tiki Cat’s only dry food line, with original adult cat kibbles and formulas for indoor cats, weight control, seniors, and kittens.

Inspired by cats’ carnivore diets, each recipe lists real meat as the top ingredient, followed by meat meals and dried eggs. All recipes are grain-free, with whole peas and chickpeas as a source of dietary fiber.

With no processed plant proteins, Born Carnivore kibbles are loaded with animal protein, providing your feline with all essential amino acids. Born Carnivore High Protein: Deboned Chicken & Egg contains high protein (47.7% as dry matter) and above-average fat (21.1% as dry matter) compared to standard dry cat food.

Tiki Cat Luau, Silver, and Lean Geleé

Grill

Grill is Tiki Cat’s seafood-only line for fish-loving felines. These 13 high-protein recipes are made with tuna, mackerel, sardines, crab surimi, prawn, crab, and calamari and contain no fruits or vegetables. As with Tiki Cat’s other wet foods, Grill recipes often include dried egg product and sunflower seed oil.

All meat and no fruit or veggies means high protein — Tiki Cat Grill Mackerel & Sardines Paté contains 66.6% protein as dry matter and 11.1% fat as dry matter. The low-fat content in this recipe makes them a smart choice for felines who are watching their figure.

Luau

Hand-packed in an irresistible consommé, Luau is an excellent wet food range by Tiki Cat. Each of the 16 canned varieties is made from several cuts of meat and broth, followed by sunflower seed oil and occasionally dried egg product.

Most recipes only contain a handful of ingredients — perfect for sensitive stomachs. Supplements in each formula include vitamin Evitamin D3thiamine, riboflavin, and vitamin B12.

Like Tiki cat's other wet foods, the Luau range is top-of-the-line and features outstanding protein-to-fat ratios. Luau Ahi Tuna & Chicken recipe contains high protein (76.1% as dry matter) and average fat (9.5% as dry matter).

Silver

Check out Tiki Cat Silver if your feline starts getting a little long in the fang. Made especially for older cats ages 11 and up, these recipes are high in protein to maintain weight and muscle mass and low in phosphorus to support kidney health.

They also contain optimal omega fatty acids, vitamins, and taurine to help your cat thrive in their golden years. Tiki Cat adds pumpkin to these recipes to aid digestion.

Silver Mousse & Shreds Chicken, Salmon & Chicken Liver wet cat food consists of 60% protein as dry matter and 25% fat as dry matter.

Lean Geleé

Lean Geleé is a new offering from Tiki Cat, formulated with low fat and calories to keep your tiny tiger looking trim. Overall, they're the same high-quality recipes as the rest of Tiki Cat's wet food ranges.

The main difference is their calorie contents — Lean Geleé Chicken & Duck contains 66.6% protein as dry matter and 27.7% fat as dry matter, but with just 68 calories per pouch.

Special

The Special line consists of five mousse recipes that are not only delicious but functional. Made with ingredients such as chicken, egg, turkey, pumpkin, duck liver, salmon oil, and coconut oil, these high-protein, high-moisture formulas are especially designed to improve digestion, support joint health, promote a healthy skin and coat, or maintain a healthy weight.

Tiki Cat Meal Toppers

Meal Toppers

Tiki Cat has three lines of Born Carnivore meal toppers that are great for pairing with your cat’s regular food: Broths, which are made with real meat and include meaty bits; Complements, which have only two or three ingredients but boast 80% protein; and Functions, which offer functional benefits like digestion support and healthy weight management.

Why Wag! likes Tiki Cat

Here are some of the things that make Tiki Cat a highly rated cat food!

Wide range of products

Tiki Cat boasts plenty of variety across its several product lines. With over 40 different flavors and textures, there’s something for every feline! Products include wet and dry foods, meal toppers, and treats, while textures range from whole foods to mousse. All products can be served alone or combined to expose cats to different ingredients and nutritional benefits.

High in animal protein

As obligate carnivores, cats get their nutrients from animal-based diets. Tiki Cat foods always start with high-quality protein from animal sources such as chicken and tuna; dry recipes offer up to 47% protein while wet recipes offer up to a whopping 95% protein! Additionally, all products are made with non-GMO ingredients and contain no animal by-products, corn, white potatoes, wheat, or artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Human-grade kitchens

Tiki Cat wet foods are manufactured in Thailand, which produces millions of pounds of human food every year for other countries. Tiki products are hand-packed in facilities that also make food for human consumption.

Options for kittens and seniors

While some brands have only a couple or no options for younger and older felines, Tiki has product lines just for kittens and senior cats. Both Baby and Silver have wet and dry foods, meal toppers, and supplements that meet the unique nutritional needs of these specific life stages.

Vet recommended

Dr. Georgia Jeremiah, pet nutrition expert and one of Wag!’s veterinary consultants, personally recommends Tiki Cat to her clients.

Dr. Jeremiah says, “Tiki Cat cat food is known for high-quality, human-grade ingredients, focusing on natural, whole foods, rich animal proteins, limited ingredient options for sensitive cats, grain-free, low-carb recipes, and palatable flavors for picky eaters.”

Concerns & considerations

What should pet parents consider before buying Tiki Cat?

Cost

Since Tiki Cat is a premium brand made with high-quality natural ingredients, it’s not surprising that it’s on the pricey side. For example, a case of a dozen 2.8-ounce cans of After Dark Chicken & Quail Egg is $26.28, which works out to $2.19 per can or $0.79 per ounce. A 2.8-pound bag of Born Carnivore High Protein: Chicken, Herring & Salmon Meal costs $19.66, which is $7.03 per pound.

Some cats won’t eat it

A common gripe pet parents have about Tiki Cat is that their cats won’t eat it. While cat moms and dads love the ingredients, some felines turn up their nose at certain variants, so you may have to try different flavors and textures to see what your cat likes.

Concerns about fish recipes

Despite popular belief, fish isn’t a natural part of the feline diet and is actually an allergen for cats. Fish may also contribute to urinary tract problems and hyperthyroidism in cats.

What pet parents say about Tiki Cat

“She’s extremely picky and it’s hard to find flavors and healthy food brands she likes, but when I decided to give this brand a try, she devoured it, no joke. It’s especially good because my other cat who is glutinous and eats her food doesn’t like the flavors I chose, which lets her have this to herself.”

“This is the first time we have bought Tiki Cat. We are new cat owners and I never knew cat food could look this fresh. It smells and looks like we could eat it ourselves! Our cat LOVES this! We loved seeing the little quail egg inside and our cat loved all the flavors.”

Tiki Cat brand history

Tiki Cat is a sub-brand of Tiki Pets. Launched in 2005, Tiki Pets is known for offering minimally processed foods and treats that mimic the natural prey diets of cats and dogs. In 2015, Petropics, the maker of Tiki Pets, merged with Cloud Star to form Whitebridge Pet Brands.

Whitebridge’s goal is to help pet parents bring health and happiness to their companion animals through better nutrition. The company currently owns about a dozen brands that offer natural and minimally processed foods, treats, and supplements.

In 2020, Tiki Pets made sure dogs and cats in need received high-quality nutrition by donating $750,000 worth of Tiki Cat and Tiki Dog foods to shelters, rescues, and foster families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The donations provided 348,000 meals for cats and 100,000 meals for small dogs.

In addition to Tiki Pets, Whitebridge Pet Brands also owns Cloud Star, Schesir, Dogswell, and Buddy Biscuits. The company has offices in St. Louis, Missouri and Genoa, Italy, and has distribution in over 25 countries around the world.
