Overview
Earthborn Holistic dog food specializes in dry food, with both grain-free and whole grain options available. In their own words, they take a ‘wholesome approach to nutrition’ using ‘high-quality ingredients that nourish’ your pet.
Ancient grains and superfoods are included for their health benefits such as improving digestion. There’s nothing artificial about this food which caters for a variety of specific dietary requirements.
Alongside the dry food, there’s also a range of wet food and treats plus, a selection of food for cats, too. Venture and Unrefined are also made in Earthborn Holistic’s family-owned USA kitchens.
Read on for our Earthborn Holistic dog food review to discover what we really like about this food and what we think you should consider before deciding whether it’s right for your dog.
Earthborn Holistic product ranges and flavors
The Earthborn Holistic range features grain-free and whole grain dry food alongside some canned food and treats.
Earthborn Holistic Dry Dog Food
Earthborn Holistic Dry Dog Food
From Earthborn Holistic Great Plains Feast grain-free dry dog food to Whole Grain Ocean Fusion with whitefish meal, there are a variety of options to suit your dog's specific needs.
Unfortunately, meat or fish meal is the first ingredient of all the dry food recipes. Although many argue the benefits of meat meal — often because of its increased levels of protein — we’d prefer it to be real meat. There are also very limited flavors; small breeds and adults only have the option of turkey while large breeds and puppies are limited to chicken.
What we really like about this food is that it features many ingredients with great health benefits including nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables as well as taurine for heart health.

Earthborn Holistic Wet Dog Food
Earthborn Holistic Wet Dog Food
What we really like about the canned food is, not only does it come in more flavors, it’s made with 95% real meat which is the first ingredient alongside fruits and vegetables.
This wet food can be fed on its own or mixed in with the dry food.
The downside to this wet food, for us, is that it’s all grain-free. While grain-free can be beneficial for those with a sensitive stomach, it’s not the best option for all dogs. You can mix it with the whole grain dry food but it would be better if there were some whole grain wet food options.
K95 Grain-Free Canned Dog Food:

Earthborn Holistic Dog Treats
Earthborn Holistic Dog Treats
There’s also a range of dog treats, Earth Bites in crunchy and chewy variations, and Earth Bars. These are grain-free. Flavors include bison, salmon, turkey and lamb. Alongside this are superfoods such as butternut squash, carrots, spinach and blueberries.
Why Wag! likes Earthborn Holistic
Here’s what we really like about Earthborn Holistic:
First ingredient of wet food is real meat
While the first ingredient of the dry food is meat meal, the first ingredient of the wet food is 95% real meat. This comes in a range of tasty flavors so you are sure to find one that your pup loves.
Includes a blend of superfoods
Alongside the protein is a blend of nutrient-rich superfoods to support overall health as well as sensitive skin and stomachs. This includes pumpkin, apples, carrots, blueberries, and spinach.
Features ancient grains
The whole grain recipes include ancient grains such as oatmeal and flaxseed. This is blended together with amino acids like taurine, methionine, and l-carnitine for overall immune health and heart health.
Concerns & considerations
As with all dog food, there are a few things you need to be aware of and consider before changing your dog’s diet.
Dry food is made with meat meal
The dry food has meat or fish meal as the first listed ingredient. It’s argued that this is higher in protein but real meat or fish is usually preferable; meat and fish meals can contain tissues and organs not fit for human consumption. This food also has other lower-quality ingredients such as tapioca and canola oil — which is also a controversial ingredient.
It has been recalled once
This food has been recalled. Although it has only been recalled once, it was fairly recently in 2021. This was alongside other brands of pet food and was due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
Only a few flavors to choose from
If you have a picky eater that only likes certain flavors or they have a poultry allergy then you’re quite limited on flavors when it comes to the dry food. You have slightly more options in the grain-free range. But, most dogs will benefit from eating whole grains. This range caters for specific requirements in terms of size and age but with only one flavor for each option.
What pet parents say about Earthborn Holistic
“I have three Aussies with sensitive skin issues (or food allergies) and the Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast has really helped them. I've tried several name brand foods marketed for sensitivities and none have compared to the Earthborn. My dogs love this food, picky eater included and they are much happier now!
The almost constant scratching has finally stopped. I know all dogs are different and respond differently, but this food has made a big difference in my dogs. The reasonable price tag and auto ship are just added bonuses to this already great food. Thanks Chewy!”
“I have a miniature schnauzer with food allergies so I was looking for food that was well balanced and good for him that contained all he needed for a healthy life. I did a lot of research before I tried this food but he loves it. His coat is now shiny and sleek, his breath is better and his teeth are whiter. He gobbles it up and I couldn't be happier for him. It's worth the price to me for a healthy and happy pup.”

Earthborn Holistic brand history
Earthborn Holistic is a family-owned company that’s now in its 4th generation of family leadership. It was founded in 1926 as a small milling company, Midwestern Pet Foods.
Almost a century later they are still producing nutritional dog and cat food and treats. On their website they state: “We mix together the finest ingredients, years of knowledge, the latest technology, and lots of love to serve up the best meals for your pet.”
Earthborn Holistic recall history
Earthborn Holistic was recalled once in early 2021. Certain products from multiple brands of dog and cat food were voluntarily recalled by Midwestern Pet Foods of Evansville, Indiana. It was only the products produced in this facility that were affected.
Recalled products included specific lots of Earthborn Holistic across Adult Vantage, Coastal Catch, Primitive Natural, Small Breed and Weight Control. Other brands were also recalled including Venture and Unrefined.
The recall was because they had the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria and was the result of routine sampling.
