There’s a lot to like about Holistic Select dog food. Here are a few of the main things that stand out to us as positives about the brand.

Quality ingredients

This dog food contains no meat or poultry by-products, wheat or wheat gluten, fillers, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. What it does contain is omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat as well as antioxidants, glucosamine, probiotics and taurine for a healthy heart. Plus, nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Food that will improve your pets digestion

One of the main aims of Holistic Select is to support and improve your dog’s digestion as well as their overall health. Therefore ingredients in this food include prebiotics & probiotics, live yogurt cultures, digestive enzymes and healthy, natural fiber. 

A wide range to choose from

There’s plenty of variety in the Holistic Select range. Not only does it cater for puppies, adults and seniors, there’s also a range for large breed dogs too. Plus, there’s an option of grain-free recipes for dogs that require this diet. There’s also plenty of flavors to choose from. 

As with all dog food, there are a few things you should consider before deciding whether this is the right food for your pup.

It’s quite expensive

It’s not the most budget-friendly food on the market and according to some pet parents it has recently had an increase in price. However, many are happy to pay it as they feel it’s benefiting their pup.

Meat meal rather than meat

Although this food does contain protein, the majority of the food has meat meal as the first ingredient rather than meat. On their website Holistic Select state they use: “meat meals from high quality protein sources with high digestibility which offers the correct amino acid profile in the correct proportions.” Meat meal isn’t always poor quality, but it divides opinion.

Doesn’t agree with all dogs

Some pet parents claim their fussy eaters refused to eat the food, while other pet parents of large breeds say the food specifically formulated for them caused stomach upset and diarrhea. However, pet parents feeding the grain free range say it has helped their dogs that already had stomach issues such as IBD and IBS. 

“I have fed Holistic Select for years — my pups are in great shape for 14 years old. I have a toy poodle and a (shih poo) and both have great skin and coats. They never have stomach issues. The probiotics are better than any other food. I have no negatives with this food!”

“My dog was diagnosed with Inflammatory bowel disease about a year ago. He’s only 4 1/2 and had severe diarrhea partnered with scary night panting. We were in and out of the pet emergency hospital and he was on and off antibiotics constantly. I fed him an extremely strict diet but nothing really ever totally fixed it. But, he has been on this food for two weeks and it seems as though this is the answer!! His poops are literally perfect and it also makes him go a solid 3 times a day. I have recommended [it] already to my mom. It seems as though this is the cure/trick. Hoping his healthy gut continues, he has been doing SO amazing.”

“We started using this food for our English Bulldog, Rocky, after some research and reading of the reviews and it has been the best decision we have made for him!! He suffers from skin allergies and we have tried several holistic style foods. This one has worked the best. He has been eating it for 9 months now and he loves it so much we had to change the frequency of our auto shipping so he wouldn't run out. His coat is so silky smooth and his allergies seem bearable. Holistic Select was founded in 2000. But, the original idea was formed in a pet biscuit bakery back in 1873 and then started under the name Old Mother Hubbard in 1926. The brand was bought in the 1960s by a pet expert and this is when it became holistic pet food.  

Today it’s part of the WellPet Group and is one of the top holistic dog food brands. The WellPet Group includes other holistic pet food companies such as Wellness. The main aim of all the companies is to help your pet’s digestion through simple recipes. 

The WellPet Foundation was set up in 2007. It goes beyond pet food and supports non-profit organizations that encourage healthy and active lifestyles for pets.  

At the time of writing, Holistic Select has never had a recall on any of its products.
