Located only two miles from the historic downtown area, Westside is known as a growing neighborhood as it has plenty of new businesses and upgraded residences popping up. Largely a residential community, Westside is composed of standalone single-family homes and some smaller apartment complexes. Beyond the residences, Westside is most well-known for being home to the stadium for The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and the stadium for the Charleston RiverDogs, a minor league baseball team.
Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the United States. As a major port during the colonial era, Charleston is known as a historic city with many buildings still showing the original, colonial architecture and old cobblestone roads. Beyond it's deep history, Charleston is also known for being a hub for elevated southern cuisine, several popular music venues, and a great vacation spot!
What is the terrain like in Westside?
Walking through Westside should be a rather enjoyable experience for both you and your pup! Starting with safety first, most of this neighborhood has well-maintained sidewalks. While we do recommend you stay in the residential areas of Westside, as the more commercial areas tend to have more traffic, even the commercial areas have sidewalks. However, the residential areas may have more grass availability or shade from nice trees during those hot southern summers.
Thankfully, Westside is a relatively flat neighborhood, meaning there are hardly any incline which should help make your daily walks leisurely and relaxing.
The boundaries of Westside include Congress Street to the northwest, I-26 to the northeast, the Septima Clark Parkway and Sprint Street to the southeast, and the Ashley River to the southwest. The southwest part of the neighborhood may have more traffic during game days, so be sure to check the schedules before you head out the door.
How many greenways are there in Westside?
While looking at a map, it may appear that Westside has a great variety of greenways for you and your pup to visit, however, not all greenways in this Charleston neighborhood are pup-friendly! The arena of the Charleston RiverDogs, Stoney Field, and Johnson Hagood Memorial Stadium are all sporting facilities that are not typically open to the public.
Along the Ashley River, you will find Brittlebank Park, a ten-acre public park and nature preserve. Besides the waterfront views, Brittlebank is also home to two piers where you will often see local fishermen, several walking and biking trails, a playground, and a small off-leash area for your pup to enjoy and run off some energy! Harmon Field, the next largest greenway in the Westside neighborhood has baseball, football, and soccer fields, a basketball court, and a small playground for local children to enjoy.
The only other local greenway, Mitchell Playground, is a smaller greenway with a playground and is located next to the local elementary school.
