Wag! Walkers know Fort Wood
The Fort Wood neighborhood has been through its share of ups and downs. In the 1800s, it was a Union Army Fortification. Soon after, it became the home of many of Chattanooga’s elite. In the late 20th century, it fell into disrepair, but currently, it is being revitalized to embrace its history and charm.
Today, in addition to being a popular neighborhood for college students attending the University of Tennessee, it is also registered as a national historic site. Amenities are sparse through this area and the neighborhood is mainly residential but there is both a university and a large hospital in close proximity. If you are looking for a pet store for your pooch's needs, you will need to cross the Tennessee River to find the nearest one.
The weather here is humid subtropical which means mild winters and hot, humid summers. The good news is that with a bit of planning, you can walk year-round.
What is the terrain like in Fort Wood?
Fort Wood is built on a hill, so any direction you go is likely to have some elevation to it. Once you leave the neighborhood, terrain changes depending on which direction you go. To the southwest, the terrain becomes more even and might be better suited for casual walkers. If the hills do not bother you, then heading in any other direction will continue to produce elevation changes.
The road and sidewalks through this area are old. Many of the sidewalks are brick rather than concrete and some of the roads look more like alleys. The problem with this is that they are single lane roads with little or no shoulder. Visibility could make these hazardous to walk. Make sure you take ample precautions should you choose to walk here. What sidewalks there are have grassy shoulders and lots of trees which will protect your pup’s feet from the dangers of hot pavement.
How many greenways are there in Fort Wood?
There is only a small greenway park in the neighborhood called Perkins Park at the location of the old Fort Wood. There is not much in the way of grass here but there are benches, a gazebo, and some trees that offer a bit of shade.
About two blocks to the southeast is Warner Park which does have some green fields that you could take your dog to if you want to give them a taste of nature. On the other side of the hospital to the east, you will find Lincoln Park which a lot of has been fenced off for a baseball field. Still, there is some grass here for your pup to roll in.
Montague Park is a bit farther off from Fort Wood, but fans say it is a great place to take your dog for a walk. There is a sculpture garden there and plenty of fields for your dog to run in!
