Island Home Park is a historic neighborhood in southern Knoxville set along the Tennessee River. Many original early 19th century homes still remain and several houses in the community are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a neighborhood that offers a lot of history that you can witness on a walk with your pet. It's far away enough from downtown that you'll feel like you're not even in a city. While there are not really any retail or dining establishments, it's home to the Tennessee School For the Deaf and sits across the river from Knoxville's Metropolitan Airport.

Knoxville sees more precipitation than most of the United States, so check the forecast before heading out if you don't want to be caught in a rainstorm! The summer's average high temperature is 87 degrees, but the city has seen hotter days. Try to walk your pet in the morning before the day heats up.

Knoxville is well-known for its opportunities to explore the outdoors and you'll get a taste of that while walking your pup in Island Home Park. While it is a residential area with many homes and winding streets, you're still surrounded by extensive natural foliage. You'll notice tall trees instead of skyscrapers in the distance. The neighborhood has a few hills and the top of them offer scenic views of the surrounding wilderness and the Tennessee River.

With some hilly streets and scenic views, a walk in Island Home Park is far from boring despite how small the area is. Island Home Boulevard is a beautiful street that cuts through the neighborhood and features a pretty, tree-lined medium. While Island Home Park is quieter than many other areas in Knoxville, always be cautious on busier roadways. Some of the streets only have sidewalks on one side, so try to pay attention at all times.

Island Home Park and Knoxville, in general, is a great place for pups who love the outdoors and you will definitely get your fill of a natural setting here. The neighborhood's own Island Home Park is a sprawling riverside park that offers lots to do with your pet. There are scenic viewpoints where you can enjoy watching the Tennessee River flow past you or observe downtown Knoxville across the water. There's a playground, athletic fields, picnic tables, and shaded benches which are perfect for a rest.

The park also features access to the Will Skelton Greenway, a 3.5-mile paved trail that follows the Tennessee River. If you head east on the trail, you'll come upon Ijams Nature Center, a 300-acre wildlife habitat that welcomes you to explore its 10 miles of trails to discover Tennessee's natural splendor. You'll find wetlands, waterfalls, and different rock formations all around for you to enjoy with your pup.
