Austin Lake Estates is a mainly residential neighborhood located by the winding Colorado River. For most errands, a car will be necessary. This is a relatively affluent area of Austin so local transit doesn't typically reach this far out.

Nearby commercial businesses include a local pizzeria, specializing in gluten-free and vegan options, a gas station, and a grocery utilized by locals as a quick-stop corner store, best for running in for some milk and eggs.

Notable trails include Riverplace Nature Trail which can be a short or long car ride, depending on which side of the Colorado River you're on. Located north of the River, and it's likely you can walk to any of the three main trailheads in minutes, but south of the River, it's anywhere between a 15 to 30-minute drive. It's well worth it, however, as the trail will offer you and your pet hours of adventuring in one of the most coveted trails of Austin's Hill Country.

The original "country" of Austin's outskirts, the Austin Lake Estates neighborhood is not laden with walkable sidewalks and its residentially-located roads are narrow and curvy. The roads are paved, however, making it a drivable terrain. Moderate hills exist within the neighborhoods but are nothing compared to the incline you'll find in the local greenway, Riverplace Nature Trail.

Riverplace Trail is over 5 miles long but is not a loop, so anyone preparing to walk its full length will be hiking close to 11 miles. Powered by the volunteers of Friends of Riverplace Trail, nearly all of this greenway's inclines are measurably easier thanks to the installed steps. Dogs are allowed on the trail and leashes are strongly recommended as this can be a heavily visited area and during certain seasons is known to have snakes.

Elevation at the beginning of the trail starts low and steadily gains the further you go. Enjoy stunning views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country once you and your happily exhausted pooch reach the top.
