Wag! Walkers know Hyde Park

Hyde Park is a residential neighborhood located a 10-minute commute north of Austin, Texas’s central business district. The community is very walkable with local corner stores distributed in various locations and commercial corridors with businesses along Duval Street and Guadalupe Street.  Unique establishments like a museum and theatre are also present in the area. Local dog-friendly restaurants include Dolce Vita, Mother’s Cafe and Garden, and Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery where your pup can join you in outdoor seating venues for a bite to eat. Adjacent neighborhoods have veterinary services, and there is a large chain pet store in a shopping plaza to the east in the Hancock neighborhood that can be reached on foot by people and pets from Hyde Park. Austin enjoys warm weather and mild winters, however, summer temperatures can skyrocket dangerously high, and severe thunderstorms occur in warmer months.  Do not overexert yourself or your pup when the mercury rises to uncomfortable levels, and avoid midday heat and imminent thunderstorms by taking shelter and postponing things until temperatures abate or storms pass over.

What is the terrain like in Hyde Park?

Hyde Park is bordered by Guadalupe Street on the west, Duval Street on the southeast, and extending to Interstate 35 on the northeast side,  38th Street on the south, and 50 Street on the north, and occupies 138 acres. Airport Boulevard runs diagonally thru the northeast section and is paralleled by train tracks.  The interstate on the far east, tracks, and busy thoroughfares should only be crossed where pedestrian ways are located, and at controlled crossing points. The Waller Creek runs from the northwest to the southeast, throughout the Hyde Park neighborhood, and creates an impediment to foot traffic which can also only be crossed at streets running over the creek.  The creek ravine is well treed and brings natural habitat thru the area, however, use caution around the ravine during heavy rain as flash floods can make the waterway and surrounding banks dangerous. Most of the neighborhood is comprised of older architecturally diverse single-family detached homes. There are two designated historic districts and several historic buildings in the area that create interest.  The neighborhood and properties are heavily treed, and there is plenty of shade along the streets. Some inclines are situated in the region, however, it is mostly level and not difficult for people and pets to walk around.

How many greenways are there in Hyde Park?

Shipe Park is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood and easy to reach on foot for residents and their canine companions.  This convenient, centrally located neighborhood park is small, occupying only 1.75 acres, but has many amenities including basketball courts,  tennis courts a playground, swimming pool, picnic sites, and restrooms. There are some trees that provide shade in the park and a multi-use open area.  If you walk your dog in this local greenway, your pup should remain on a leash, and you should bring supplies to clean after your dog and dispose of waste to be respectful to other park users.

A few blocks to the northwest, local dog owners can hike on over to the Triangle Park which is a dog-friendly park.  This park has an outdoor stage where local performances take place and a local farmers market that takes place weekly on Wednesdays.  There is a large fountain that is very popular for cooling off on hot summer days and some picnic tables. Trees are limited in the park which is mostly open, and the park can be very hot in the summer, so bring water supply and sunscreen.  You can even get doggie sunscreen if your pup is prone to sunburns! The park is advertised as dog-friendly, and many local dog owners let their pups enjoy the park off leash, however, the park is not enclosed, and it may be advisable to keep your dog on a leash to prevent your pup stepping out onto local roadways, or when the greenway is full of park goers at events.
