Wag! Walkers know Oakwood
Oakwood is a tiny neighborhood in College Station situated right across the street from Texas A&M University. The neighborhood has a high percentage of college students given the proximity to the school. College Station started as a railroad stop in 1860, but it was only 11 short years before the university moved in and it has been a college town ever since. The neighborhood is strictly residential and with a lot of foot and bicycle traffic, it is a highly walkable neighborhood. Amenities are never very far away and the retail area is literally four blocks out of Oakwood, making it an easy walk.
The climate here is subtropical, so look forward to mild winters that are almost always walkable. However, summers are hot, so you must plan your walks carefully to ensure that your favorite four-legged companion does not end up with burned feet or overheating.
What is the terrain like in Oakwood?
The terrain in and around Oakwood is primarily flat with a small amount of elevation heading to the northeast towards the retail center on the other side of the university. In addition, only the bigger streets have sidewalks to speak of so you are relegated to walking on the streets unless you choose to stick to the main roads. Traffic should be relatively quiet through these areas because of the high level of non-motorized traffic, but it is important to be safe as you are walking. Reflective clothing is always a good idea if you are walking any time visibility is poor and be sure to be mindful of the heat of the road on your dog’s feet.
There are plenty of side streets in the area, so there will never be an issue of where you can walk and you can mix your walks up by choosing different directions since there are plenty of residential areas to choose from.
How many greenways are there in Oakwood?
There is an abundance of greenways available both on campus and off where you can take your dog for a walk. Aggie Park is across the street and offers green spaces as well as paths for walking and jogging. A block to the west is Brison Park which has Bee Creek running through it. In addition to grass, you will find some wooded areas that will make a nice place for your pup to explore.
Directly to the east is Anderson Park which has large green fields and a walking trail. This park is a bit farther away, but still well within walking distance. Just to the southeast of Anderson Park, you will also find Lemontree Park. What makes this park noteworthy is the trail running through it. If you are looking for someplace where you can get some serious steps in, this might be the direction to head in.
