It's been a long time since the Agricultural and Mechanical College became legendary by being the first high education school in the Lone Star State, but since then, the population has grown from the hundreds to the hundred-thousands.

College Station hangs just above two of the state's biggest cities: Houston and Austin. Less than two hours from either metropolis, it is a popular destination for students looking for an award-winning university who don't want to be too far from home or an exciting city as a two-hour driving distance is not considered generally considered 'far' by Texans.

What's more is the close proximity to Bryan, Texas which came to be just a few years before A&M. While College Station doesn't technically have a downtown, what they lack, Bryan more than makes up for with their historic 'main street' area. Just a 15-minute drive from Southern Plantation in College Station, Bryan's downtown has a multitude of shops and sights to enjoy.

Southern Plantation can be rather inconvenient to walk around because it lacks sidewalks. While main roads such as Barron Road or Alexandria Avenue, have designated space for pedestrians, the small streets of the suburban community do not.

The northern and eastern borders of the neighborhood are lined by busy highways, so be aware of this if your dog is new to the sounds and movements of vehicles. Some dogs will pursue anything that zooms quickly past them and this can lead to a dangerous encounter. If you want to avoid any potential threat, you can easily avoid the Earl Rudder Freeway by traveling the more southern and western blocks of the suburb.

While walking Southern Plantation, you may come across a fellow walker or two, but it's more likely that residents of the neighborhood would venture out for a hike as there are a number of parks to choose from that are close to the community.

Less than a minute's drive down the road is Southern Oaks Park. This public space is known for its disk golf course which sprawls across the park. There are also recreational fields for local sports programming and a playground to entertain children. Most of the park is open, flat grass with a few younger trees growing. To most, this would seem to be unused space, but for dog owners, we know this is perfect for running and playing fetch. Additionally, the park's sidewalks run through a wooded area, giving you a break from the mundane open prairie of northern Texas.

If your pup is up for a quick drive, there's also Castlerock Park. This park is easily adopted by the Southern Plantation community as it is nearby and full of amenities. The proximity of an elementary school makes this public spot a hit with children. It also has open space and wooded trails to explore.
